The fans that are upset that they added in that scene with Brienne and Jamie's sister are hilarious. GRRM wrote that episode, so it's pretty much canon.

Re: SPOILERS

I saw that too. You won't believe the mental gymnastics purists will get into to show that GRRM is actually helpless a victim of D&D

Oh and Tywin being 'OOC' for protecting Tommen

Re: SPOILERS

GRRM doesnt write every scene in his episodes. He's said about 80% is his stuff.

Not referring to that particular scene but the show in general but I think GRRM understands that the book and the show are different canons, so when he's writing for the show he's writing the show canon, not the book canon.

I would like evidence of these changes that GRRM made and approved of (I don't doubt that they exist, but...the only one I've heard of is his disappointment with Robb's wife and how her plot was mismanaged.)

Also, the sex and violence between book and show is DRASTICALLY different. There's a difference in tone, amount, and type, and it's silly to deny that.

I enjoy both versions of the material, to varying degrees, but I don't understand how you can honestly say that it hasn't massively changed from book to television.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"massively"

Yeah, no.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
They completely butchered Robb in the show. The point of the character was that he was his father's son and that the stupid Stark honor was the reason why he ended up dead, just like his father. He would have never broke his engagement just because he had feelings for a girl.

How is the sex and violence drastically different
a_potato: (Default)

[personal profile] a_potato 2014-04-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Grant you, I've only read the first book and watched the first season (and the main reason I've only watched the first season is because...I've only read the first book. And I just can't do one without having done the other), but I agree with you wrt the sex and violence. It's handled very differently on the show (I mean, shit, people even came up with a new term to describe what's going on in the show: "sexposition"), and it's very noticeable.

I would disagree that, during adaptation, it was "massively changed," but I hear that subsequent seasons mark a further departure from the books than the first season, so my difference in opinion may just be due to my limited knowledge.

I think the small changes the show has made have been in the interest of better, tighter storytelling. I enjoy both books and show but I prefer the streamlining of the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. Because Robb/Talisa wasn't a change at all from Robb/Jeyne Westerling. (Go ahead and say "Jeyne wasn't at all interesting or important," I can always c/p my usual comment about how canonically she's got a lot going on if people aren't just skimming ahead for the Red Wedding. Sorry to be on the defensive but man am I over arguing this.) And if Shae and Tyrion turn out the same way that won't have made anything worse at all, no.

Not to mention how aging everyone up has made everyone look even dumber than they did in the books (aka Rickman Snape Characterization Syndrome). I mean underage sex, yeah, ew, also it's easier to cast older actors, but holy hell does it screw up some characterizations.

It's not so much that the sex scenes in the books are 'meaningful', they're just less gratitous than the show. GRRM never had a subplot about Podrick's dick impressing the prostitutes. He's also fairly even-handed in that he describes penises whereas the show has a phobia of non-Hodor dicks.

I think the problem is that a lot of fans, for whatever reason, expect book to film adaptations to be 100% accurate to gain "faithful" status. I used to be the same way, especially when the first couple Harry Potter movies came out. I was convinced, CONVINCED, that JK Rowling would make Peeves a huge part of the last book or something so that the filmmakers would be screwed. My nine year old self walked out of that movie theatre complained that Harry's eyes weren't the right color.

You're right that it is one of the most faithful adaptations out there (my issues with show!Robb aside), but until certain fans sort of wise up to the whole art of, well, "adapting" things, there are always going to be complaints.

What I like about the show is that threats of rape and rape can happen to men as well in some contexts, it's not a woman-only issue.
Also, the less icky obsession with pedophilia.

Re: sex and violence

The thing is that they have established their show as the "LotR with blood and boobs and politics fuck yeah!" show. Maybe they even set out to do it this way, maybe not, but that's what it's become... and people like it. Lots of people. Probably not you, or those like you, but honestly, in terms of the general viewership you guys are not the majority. Hell, many people have HBO just for those things. So I'm gonna guess that they will keep doing this thing that a lot of people want so that they can stay on the air and keep telling the story from the books you love so much.

Robb Stark.

Catelyn Stark.

Stannis Baratheon.

All three of these characters are completely different people on the show than they are in the books. That's not an opinion or an interpretation, that's a fact. Important facts about their personalities, their opinions and their storylines have been changed. This is also, to a lesser degree, true for a lot of characters. I don't care WHO is responsible for these changes. I don't care if some viewers like these changes. But fact is, the show is NOT a faithful adaptation when it changes a bunch of things about characters' personalities and storylines, because that's pretty much the opposite of a faithful adaptation. So OP is either really dumb or, more likely, a troll.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be with you if not for the way they fucked Catelyn over. She's the pov character, not Robb. Yet in the second and third seasons I swear you could count her scenes on one hand because the show dudes decided they weren't interested in her, what they really wanted to do was to spend more time with Robb. ....oh wait, Robb's a fucking idiot. BUT WAIT, WE CAN FIX THIS! Let's invent him a love story, with this whole new character we made up, and spend a bunch of time on this instead of ya know SHIT THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED and Catelyn sits around in the background (while we're at it let's just take all her decisions away from her and have people like Littlefinger or the Blackfish or Robb himself suggest them to her, that's good characterization right?) and then by the time the Red Wedding happens it can be like her third appearance that season and she dies.

like. GRRM did not make Robb a POV character FOR A REASON. He showed him, for most of the series where he's still alive, pretty much only through Cat's eyes FOR A REASON. Because Robb is a deconstruction of the Boy King trope (well, one of two in that series. The other one is Joffrey) in which he's young, he's tough, he's a good battle commander, he's even got the moral high ground! But he's still just 15 in the books, 19ish in the show, which means he makes stupid decisions. We are forced to watch these decisions through the eyes of his mother who CONSISTENTLY advises him to do exactly the opposite of those things and he keeps going "mom, I got this". "Honey, maybe you shouldn't send the Greyjoys back the only leverage we have against them.." "mom, I got this." "honey, Cersei has your sisters and we have her brother, let's make a deal" "mom, I got this." (meanwhile, Tywin Lannister got Sansa married to Tyrion so now the Lannisters have themselves a claim to Winterfell and therefore THE NORTH.) "Honey, you swore an oath to the Freys, a massive house with a ton of soldiers AND a very important strategic position, and incidentally you KNOW their big daddy is a spiteful dickhole -" "mom, I got this." "HONEY, MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BEHEAD THE GUY WHO'S THE PATRIARCH OF LITERALLY HALF YOUR FORCES" "MOM, I GOT THIS."

this is the point of her story. But the show doesn't care. To the show, it's not even HER story (never mind the fact that -MASSIVE- SPOILER FOR THE END OF THIS UPCOMING SEASON.........SHE'S the one who's gonna come back. END OF SPOILER) the show just wanted to take away the deconstructive aspect of it and make it a straightforward Robb Story about a brave young kid who died for love rather than a kid who wanted to do right but had no place styling himself a king and died because he wasn't ready for that level of responsibility, and the real focal point of the story is powerless to stop it.

it upset me on various levels. One, because I love Cat. Two, because it's rare enough that a fantasy-flavoured political thriller like this would even FEATURE a chharacter like her in an important role in the first place - a mother, not evil but not perfect either, who doesn't fight with a sword at all. placing her there and showing so much of the action through her eyes felt like a goddamn feminist victory, and then the show ballsed it up - seemingly through a lack of understanding of what the Robb storyline was all about in the first place.

other than this, yes, it's a pretty faithful adaptation. Other changes exist but none of them really bother me (though i'm not quiiiiite sure what they're gonna do with the Tyrion and Shae story at this point and that has the possibility of weird fuckery as well)
