To be fair, most of the tweets I've seen I've seen it on my Tumblr dash, so they'd probably are out of context, but here's one:

"Home is where the heart is. We found it one day in the sink. It hums things late at night, but they are not songs."

After seeing a lot of tweets like this, I gave up on even trying to listen to the podcast.

Yeah, that's based on an idiom - namely "Home is where the heart is." It's just taking it more literally than it's intended to be.

"Home is where the heart is" is a well-known saying referring to your metaphorical heart.

"We found it one day in the sink" turns the "heart" into a literal heart, which is the primary joke. The secondary joke is that a sink is kind of a strange place to find the heart (you'd think it would have been hidden or something). The tertiary joke is that if you reread the first sentence, you hear the emphasis on the words differently, like "Ohhhh, HOME is where the heart is! I was wondering where that heart went!"

The last sentence is just a weird creepy random thing.

The podcast is not like the tweets. A lot of it relies on the same concept -- taking something familiar and twisting it in a direction you weren't expecting -- but the tweets are based on the literal meanings of phrases that aren't supposed to be taken literally and will already be familiar to an American audience.

Ah, so to understand the tweets you'd have to be versed on American culture and/or idioms... No wonder some of the meanings just fly over my head. I mean, I know some, but definitely not all of them...

It's also interesting to note the podcast is different to the tweets. I thought they were pretty much the same just on different formats.

Nah, the podcast is a half an hour long and has an overarching plot and recurring characters. If you're interested, listening to it might help your English skills.

The original phrase means "Home is the place where you feel like you belong", but in Night Vale it means there is an actual heart in your home. And that it hums at night.
