Me too. I am going to miss The Colbert Report so much.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. The 2016 election won't be the same without The Colbert Report.

It's not a step down in terms of cultural cachet - The Late Show, and the late night talk show in general, have pretty decent cultural legacies. And it doesn't have to be a step down in terms of content either. Yeah, most late night talk shows these days are boring and dull and pre-staged, uninteresting, boring interviews with boring celebrities, but they don't have to be, and I feel like if anyone has a chance at making an interesting late night talk show with interesting and unpredictable and insightful interviews, Colbert does.

Plus, the Colbert joke character was honestly getting pretty threadbare by this point.

I pretty much agree.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, agreed, agreed. :< I hope he at least does a segment as his 'character' so we can get a bit of that from time to time.

This article came up recently on the A.V. Club, so yana on this:

I am a bit worried about it as not everyone is great with talk shows and talk shows are more often then not pretty stale and even talented comedians can do poorly with them.

Celebrity interviews are usually horrible too unless you have a really good guest. Conan was my favorite late night host back in the day but even in his case I'd often skip the interviews.

There was a good article about his "downward success" <a href="http://www.avclub.com/article/stephen-colbert-succeeding-downward-taking-over-la-203387>here.</a>

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. We need him now more than ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If he were stepping away from Report to do something new and game-changing (like Report was when it started), I'd be ecstatic. This same shit, different host business is really disappointing, even if it's a good personal career move.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm happy for him because its probably a big increase in pay and recognition, but the Colbert Report is such a solid show! Its a shame he cant magically do both

+1

This is the first I'm hearing of it.

The Colbert Report is really ending? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I love the Colbert Report but because I'm in Australia there are some parts that don't work for me. The Daily Show and Colbert Report are more like a cult thing here because you have to be aware of international politics.

That said, Jimmy Fallon has taken off hugely in popularity here since he took over the Tonight Show. Late Night was on a pay TV channel and switched over to the Tonight Show (that wasn't screened here) and now a free to air channel (ABC2) has picked it up as well. There's a lot of buzz about it right now. So this could well lift Colbert up to an international star.

I'm not getting my hopes up, but it'd be nice if he'd be able to continue interviewing scientists and authors too. The regular celeb interviews on the Report, I usually ignore if it's not a musician, but the interviews with scientists and academics are always interesting to me, and usually the author interviews are too.

The Colbert Report will be missed. I enjoyed watching him more than Jon Stewart. Colbert was/is more sassier and takes bigger chances with his humour from what I saw of both shows.

I have very mixed feelings about it.

I feel you, OP, in the sense that the Report is incredible and irreplaceable, and I'm going to miss it so much.

On the other hand, I'm happy for him and I think that he'll make a great Late Night host. He has the potential to make it more engaging than it's been in a long time.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you completely OP.

Yes. 100% agree.

Yeah. I feel exactly the same way. Like...okay, that is a really big name, but dude, poignant political satire is important, especially right now.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
People don't seem to have much faith in Colbert, which seems odd to me after so many years of brilliance. I don't think he's going to follow the standard Talk Show format. The Colbert Report is pretty unique, Daily Show notwithstanding, and I bet Colbert isn't going to just do some boring old talk show format or suck-up personality.

Lol I'm glad he's getting on the Late Show, I hated the Colbert Report. Maybe on the Late Show I won't want to scream every time he talks.
