What. Oh my God, I never read any of his books and now I am actually kinda glad I didn't.

(I once had a school field trip to a concentration camp - and two of my classmates started to make out in front of the gates and stuff and I think I have never seen anything more inappropriate in my entire life)

It's been more than a decade. Can we all just finally admit to loving this movie (if we do)? Most of the F!S crowd weren't even pubescent when this movie and the adjoining hate came out. The people spreading the hate are now grown-ups and possibly middle-aged.

I was in high school, and I have no real interest in this movie, but I can attest that most of the people I heard hating it were male classmates who insisted Leonardo DiCaprio was gay, even in a class discussion about the movie. When I asked what that had to do with anything, they conceded that it had nothing to do with anything, but remained adamant that he was gay. Hatred of Titanic has thus become associated with... well, that.

haha I have never heard this hate (I'm in the "pre-pubescent when the movie came out" club), but I can imagine it...f!s wasn't around, but if anything even remotely similar existed, I'm sure tons of people were going on about how overrated it was.

People always go on about the movie being overrated, but I feel like I'm the only one who thinks it's tasteless, too.
You do NOT use a massive tragedy as a framework for your little romance story.
(This is the same reason I didn't watch the recent Pompeii movie)

I've long seen Titanic as being a two-in-one: the first is a passable love story that just happens to take place on the namesake ship. Immediately following is a kinda-decent disaster movie that... conveniently uses the same exact actors and crew as the first movie!

As someone who loves disaster movies, you'll get no mockery from me.

They're no worse than a lot of other fictional couples, and what the movie lacked in terms of great original storytelling it make up for in set dressing, effects and historically accurate details, IMO.

But then my Dad was a big Titanic enthusiast, and the film always makes me think of him and what a crime it was that he didn't live quite long enough to see it.

I need to rewatch this movie. When I was younger I loved it, then rewatched it in my later teens and hated it. Now I wonder what side I'd be on.

There's nothing wrong with you. It's a good movie and it was a huge pop-culture phenomenon. Is it melodramatic and a bit cheesy? Maybe. But it's okay to like it.

I was in high school when it came out, and I cried both times that I saw it in the theater, more for the scenes of ordinary people dying than for Kate and Leo. It's very visually impactful.
