Political incorrectness gone mad?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
So I know a lot of people who seem to like the idea of "political correctness gone mad" or maybe now it's SJWs instead of political correctness (at least on the internet/among younger people).

But has anyone noticed the people who are against political correctness/SJWs behaving in the exact same way? As in, getting mad/offended about unimportant things (including in cases where they misunderstood something), looking for things to get offended about, and refusing to tolerate disagreement?

For example, someone recently posted a thing on facebook... it was just someone's rule 63 (aka genderbent) version of the Hobbit, and this guy was all "my childhood was raped" and had some quote about how "fragile" and easy to destroy are, basically implying that whoever had written the Rule 63 thing had totally ruined The Hobbit for him, like he can't enjoy the original now.

This is the same guy who constantly posts things like "if something offends you, YOU are the problem, not the thing" or "when someone says they are offended by something, they are telling you to censor yourself because they can't handle opposing opinions" (these aren't actual quotes, more like paraphrases, but they had the same idea).

I was really tempted to post on the Hobbit link telling him that if a simple genderbend thing offends him, be careful what you Google so you don't run into worse stuff (porn, gore, whatever). Or tell him that if he can't enjoy the original book just because someone made a genderbent version, then the "fragile" thing is his mind, not the book. But that probably wouldn't have ended well, and who knows how many people would have been mad at me.

I've also had problems with my dad, especially when I was a kid. I'd do something like ask a simple question, and would get my head verbally bitten off because he somehow misinterpreted my innocent question as an attempt to censor him or tell him something he had said was bad. Like I'd ask "what does that word mean" and he'd snarl at me to "go change the world on my own time" or insist that I was telling him what to say when I was really just asking what a word meant. So I basically ended up having to walk on eggshells to avoid making him mad, and all because he was so obsessed with the idea that everyone was trying to tell him he couldn't say certain things.

There are also a large contingent of people who seem to think freedom of speech includes freedom from being disagreed with or questioned about your opinions. We have free speech... so shut up, don't disagree, and don't ask questions!!! Annoys the hell out of me.

I think the biggest issue is that most people aren't interested in having an open conversation with other people and are more interested in having their opinions heard instead.

And yeah, it's really sad how many people don't understand what freedom of speech entails.

Yep. Not so much in fandom spaces, in my experience, but on the internet at large -- all the damn time.

Oh man I made a post about how the anti-SJWs were getting to be more annoying than the SJWs years ago. I'd say it's even worse now.

honestly I blame SJWs for that. They pretty much started an arms race by being more obnoxious than people like my dad.

Maybe. Although I realize it's too much to ask for to have reason win the day (i.e. yes, some things are actually offensive/bigoted and we need to have public discussions about them, but no, not everything is).

Sure you have people crying wolf over nothing, true, but you also have a whole torrent of comments on any given news site anything up to and including straight up racism, homophobia, and sexual harassment shrieking "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD!!".

1. I would definitely have responded to him that way but of course I don't know about the social dynamics around the situation. He sounds obnoxious, though.

2. I actually think the people saying "ew political correctness" and the people saying "ew SJWs" are not entirely overlapping.

Yeah, the "political correctness" people are usually older adults or people who have don't spend much time in certain parts of the internet. "SJW" people are usually younger and into tumblr or other social networks other than Facebook.

The "PC" people also tend to be the uber-conservative ones (because they cba to be decent, so they use it as an excuse). I have seen some of them rant about SJWs too, but they badly misuse the phrase SJW (they use it to mean someone interested in social justice in a relatively normal way, you know, the types who know what SJWs are and vehemently dislike them)

Not really. But then again the only places I hang out online anymore are here and a Disney pin forum. Pin drama, on the very rare occasions it arises, can be very entertaining and is never SJ related at all.

What is "pin" in this context?

I really think it comes down to the majority of people who just want to be right. That's all.

Yeah.

There's a certain sort of person who will fight tooth and nail against logic and decency, just for the sake of being right. And that person could be on either side of the political spectrum.

I've noticed this thing where conservatives try to prove how un-PC they are by being offensive. And they wonder why they have such a hard time convincing minorities and women to vote for them...

Re: Political incorrectness gone mad?

You know, I was thinking today: would any of these people go into work, walk up to their boss, and say "hey, you cocksucker, I finished that fucking report you asked me to write up. Man, what a fucking shit show?"

They wouldn't. They know it wouldn't be appropriate. If someone were reprimanded for speaking that way in the office, then they would understand. Yet they don't go around complaining about how they can't exercise their "freedom of speech" while at work.

When it comes to language in certain contexts, we have standards. We may be expected to be professional; we may just be expected to be courteous. But either way, it is generally recognized as being out of line for us to speak in certain ways. They go along with this until someone says that they shouldn't say something that, for whatever reason, they would really like to say, and then suddenly FASCISM!

I have absolutely noticed this. Shit, I've been noticing it for years.

They shout about freedom of speech while decrying anyone who expresses "offense," failing to realize that expressing offense is exercising freedom of speech. They cry about a lack of tolerance for their views while failing to realize that mere disagreement is not intolerance, and that a free society cannot use views that would lead to discrimination as a basis for law.

Basically, they're not really any different. They just wound up on a different political path.

I'm also of the mind that phrases like "if something offends you, YOU are the problem, not the thing" mean "I would like permission to continue being an asshole."

Re: Political incorrectness gone mad?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much.

I've also noticed a lot of them have this weird victim mentality.

Like: "I'm totally oppressed for being white/rich/a dude/all of the above!"

Well, yeah, everybody has shitty stuff happen to them in life, and being white or rich or whatever doesn't negate that or make that pain any less... but odds are you're not going to get beaten up for being a rich white dude.

IDK it just saddens and angers me when they a) completely fail to empathize or understand people's experiences of discrimination, and b) then turn around and claim they're TOTALLY DISCRIMINATED AGAINST EVEN MORE THAN YOU like it's some kind of fucking competition.

The really fun thing about the victim mentality is that they will accuse other people of having a victim mentality, and use said mentality as a reason to dismiss/deride/argue for a crackdown on them. I'll take lack of self-awareness for 1000, please.

And, yeah, there is a profound lack of empathy, and I think that feeds into your point b). Your own feelings seem a hell of a lot more immediate and important when you have trouble imagining the feelings of anyone else.

No, I agree. A lot of anti-SJW people act like you dragged out and shot all their puppies if you mention things like gender or race- which I do think are important things to talk about. I get that some of it is a reaction to ridiculous SJW culture, but a lot of it also feels like they just hated anything that criticizes the status quo in the first place, and uses 'SJW-ism' as an excuse to shut the conversation down.

Re: Political incorrectness gone mad?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god yes, it annoys the shit out of me too.

They'll be like: "LOLOLOL WHY ARE YOU OFFENDED BY ME CALLING YOU THIS HORRIBLE SLUR IT'S JUST A WORD CAN'T YOU TAKE A JOKE IT'S NOT LIKE I'M ACTUALLY BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF YOU."

And then they turn around and go: "BAAWWWWWWW DON'T SAY THINGS I DISAGREE WITH!"

basic human decency is not "political correctness gone mad", you assholes

What gets me is the way a lot of the anti people try to replicate the language of the social justice people about patriarchy and oppression and end up talking about a tiny percentage of people with no political power ("SJWs") in the same way that feminists talk about the patriarchy.

Re: Political incorrectness gone mad?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
lol yes like there's an Evil High Council of Feminist Lesbian Social Justice Warriors.

the thing that gets me is that there's actual groups of people out there who actually believe that white people are oppressed by black people, or that men are oppressed by women.

but if you take even a passing glance at history it's obviously not the case.

the mental gymnastics it must take to deny reality is just exhausting and kind of hilarious.

I can't hear that phrase without thinking of the genius Stewart Lee routine.

So that's my take I guess.

They also have well meaning people who honesty believe in their side. But those aren't the ones your going to remeber. Nope. In your example, your going to remember the fedorabro MRA who makes a rape joke while saying rape culture doesn't exist.
