Making new habits is hard work

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
So harrrrd. One of the ways I've been trying to help myself create healthier better habits is blocking a lot of sites in an attempt to get myself off the computer and productive. I spend a seriously unhealthy amount of time doing absolutely nothing online. I only allow myself to visit places like FS on the weekends now.

Any new habits others are working on?

I'm trying to exercise regularly but my health problems make it difficult in addition to it just being really hard to form new habits. I'm tired of getting winded so easily though so I'm trying to push through and build up some stamina.

I went through a similar thing recently. It's tough but you can do it :) Good luck!

Remembering to brush my teeth. That's taken a hit this weekend, due to the last tube of toothpaste going on my parent and brother's camping trip, and the local shops not having any in stock.

Not eating as much sugar/chocolate... erm... -looks shiftily at the bag next to her- I think I chose the wrong time of year for that.

We buy it in bulk from Costco, and it's been a while since any was bought, and no one thought to buy any on the last trip.

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd have walked down to Asda yesterday and got some, but ah well.

Seconding being glad I'm not the only person who just straight-up fails at brushing.

I've been making an effort to buy things for lunches during the work week, rather than go out every other day to buy things like eggrolls or pizza slices at the local supermarket's kitchen. It's really difficult, esp. the times when I don't have quite enough going into a payday*week or I plum forget to go to the grocery store on Sundays. But after I largely gave up eating out for Lent, it did a wonder on my bank account, so I'm hoping to keep it going for the foreseeable future.

It's just so dang tempting having 3-4 restaurants within close proximity to work, ughhh.

Mainly going to bed earlier. Lately I've been staying up till 2AM reading fanfic, but that is not a good habit; makes it harder for me to get up early, eat and exercise.

Ah yes, this too. I used to be really good about going to bed early and getting up at a reasonable time but then I made friends who are night owls. I still feel miserable when I wake up in the afternoon so I should try to avoid that.

For a while I was going to bed at a reasonable time too, and it was lovely. We should get back into it...

Mmm, waking up in the afternoon sounds kind of glorious, but I know that would throw one off. I still wake up in the morning, usually even at my 'usual time' but it's hard when you're running on a couple of hours sleep. Either that or I wake up a few hours too late, and by the time I finish everything I need to do it's lunch and I regret everything.

You should tell your friends you need sleep! lol.

Oh god, the struggle of that whole first paragraph yes. Finding that balance is so frustrating. I was just thinking about that the other day and how I used to live off of 200 calories a day and was fine (prob not fine, but able to function!) and yes, now I get crabby and a headache and generally do not function well if I skip meals. And when I was unhealthy I lost weight so quickly, and now it seems forever before there's any change. I know it's healthier and the right thing to do, but it's endlessly frustrating some days.

I'm trying to remember to eat more regularly. I keep forgetting and I have to eat about 6 times a day, preferably something with protein, or else I get ill pretty quickly.

I've been so good this week. A lot of seeds, nuts and mange tout for snacking.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
what's a mange?
I need to eat every 2-3 hours and I can't even snack on nuts. It gets a bit frustrating sometimes. All the planning.

I had to block myself from reading Questionable Contact and Shortpacked because I kept going back to them despite hating them severely.

At least in QC's case I can blame it on muscle memory since I have a tendency to hit Q first when typing in a URL.

I stopped reading Shortpacked awhile ago, but I'm glad to see someone else have such strong dislike or hatred for them! I felt so alone in that reaction.

I'm trying to spend less time online, but it is hard. FS isn't a problem because it only updates once a day, but there are other sites where I spend too much time.

I'm beginning a start-of-the-day journal (already keep a bedtime journal). Other than that, exercising 3x/week and studying language every day, both of which are going well. Habits are hard to form, it's true. I think one of the biggest keys is just time. Which doesn't make it any easier.

Exercising more, I am so bad at slacking off on it for weeks at a time but I've been managing to stick to doing it on my schedule so far.

I'm trying to get in the habit of doing some light exercises on a MWF schedule, taking vitamins every day and being more mindful of my eating habits in general. It hasn't been an easy road, especially when it comes to finding the kind of exercises I can handle (being crippled SUCKS), but I've finally found a few I can manage without spending the following three days in too much pain to move, as well vitamins that don't mess my system up and healthy foods I actually enjoy. So far, my new system is working; I've lost ten lbs. and I'm starting to build up a bit of stamina. Here's hoping my mental fortitude holds up long enough for this to become a real habit. Good luck to you too, anon!

I'm trying to develop a habit of going to the gym twice a week (or once a week if i'm sick sick).
I'm on to week 6 or 7? so still working at it, I've conscripted friends into making sure I go which has worked so far.
