There are communities specifically dedicated to posting bad fic and bad summaries for mocking. The way I look at it, if someone is looking in that community it's because they want to mock someones fic, so if they come across their own fic being mocked it's pretty hypocritical to be all up in arms about it when they were doing it themselves. That's just how I feel about it. And I say that as someone who has seen their summaries end up on one of those communities.

As long as you're not actively harassing the writer or encouraging others to do so I don't think you're being a bad person.

Actually, sometimes people look through it to make sure they aren't on it. I remember there was a time I was more sensitive and I would check to make sure I wasn't on there. So, not all people look at those communities with ONLY the intent of mocking others.

This exactly. I wouldn't have been bothered by harsh criticism or even outright mockery of my fics if it was in a review or some other form of direct contact, but when I just started out I was extremely paranoid about someone attempting to mock me "behind my back" and checked badfic communities almost every day just to make sure it wasn't happening.

I've seen a surprising amount of people who participate in those communities act legit shocked when the actual authors find out and contact them or something, like there's no way someone can know about their activities unless they're doing it themselves. Do they seriously believe no one Googles their fic titles/usernames/etc.?

Yes I agree. Half of the sting that came from things like that is the fact that it's being done behind your back.

Like I remember some of the people who did it just used to laugh about the "butthurt" authors getting mad, but did they ever stop and consider the author's point of view that this mockery is being done behind their back. In that light it's not really so 'whiny' or 'bratty' when they get mad, now is it?

(to make it worse some people who did it could be REALLY nasty saying things like "the author is retarded and their mother should have aborted them. Not all of them were like this, I knew a few really good ones, even ones who gave critique I respected but, when anyone can start a comm to do this you're going to get some nasty ones.)
