I'm probably dating myself very hard here, but OP reminded me of when MSTings of fan fics -mostly badfic- used to be all over the place (sometimes with permission, but most of the time without).

BRB, gonna go find some old MSTings of David Gonterman fics for old times' sake.

I think there are places where people do this! And chances are, the authors aren't going to stumble across the discussion of their fics (in my experience, the odds are pretty low). Though I do sometimes wish there was something like what you are describing - an active multifandom non-specific comm for discussing any and every form of bad fanworks out there. As it is, I only ever saw blogs/genre-specific comms (e.g. http://bad-fanfiction.tumblr.com/)

The tricky part is to prevent the followers from contacting the author. Like, I think that the main danger is the author's coming across your posts not so much as the members of the comm going after the author and sending them non-constructive criticism.

(if not for this last part, I'd totally engage in tons of badfic-related discussions. Even despite the fact that I know that some of my early works could totally end up being discussed. Or maybe thanks to this fact.)

I had a private journal where I'd do write ups for this stuff. Kind of cathartic but still not really want I wanted. I feel you OP.

Sadly, those two options are mutually exclusive.

i do this on my twitter. i don't link to it (unless someone asks... lol) or mention author name. i think as long as you aren't going directly to the author to mock them it's whatever.

Here's a thought

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-04-20 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You could try asking older fanfic authors for bits of their old fics to pick at to start off without hurting people's feelings. Ask people around here if they have any old shames to share.

I wish I could offer some of my really bad ones but I deleted some of them. Hopefully others kept there's.

Don't think that solves the problem

GOOD

I feel your pain, anon. Sometimes I just see such awful shit online and I want to make fun of it, but then I think about how hurt those authors would probably be if they found those posts, and it's just not worth making someone sad just to have a good laugh.

So, so seconded, OP. I'm always tempted to liveblog my badfic reading or share a really awful AO3 summary (protip: never say "I suck at summaries"), but anything involving direct quotes is really difficult to keep anonymous, and that just seems unkind. So I keep it to a small Skype chat with friends who appreciate my horrified amazement.

There are communities specifically dedicated to posting bad fic and bad summaries for mocking. The way I look at it, if someone is looking in that community it's because they want to mock someones fic, so if they come across their own fic being mocked it's pretty hypocritical to be all up in arms about it when they were doing it themselves. That's just how I feel about it. And I say that as someone who has seen their summaries end up on one of those communities.

As long as you're not actively harassing the writer or encouraging others to do so I don't think you're being a bad person.

Why don't you try browsing Wattpad for a while, to give you more perspective on how bad things can truly get. And the futility of railing against it. Works for me. Anything with proper spelling that doesn't violate causality starts to look like progress.

I'm exactly the same. The desire to point out crap is so strong, but hurting people sucks.

[identity profile] sara-lakali.livejournal.com 2014-04-20 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, you can shred any of my fics that you feel deserve it, just maybe do it privately in an email?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Fail-fandomanon on LJ has had fic rant and bad AO3 tags threads before, and there are also the regular fic discussion, unpopular opinions, and things you wouldn't admit unanon threads. (Don't try going there right now, though, LJ's impressively broken at the moment.)

FFA has a lifeboat here

I actually want to hear your opinions on your least favorite crossover writer-- you don't have to name names, but I really like hearing what other people do or don't like about crossovers.

Good. Because it sounds like you don't want to give constructive criticism, you want to be an asshole and border on bullying. :/

Unpopular, I know, but you can critique badfic without being an asshat about it. I assume if you want to do this, you'd jump at the chance to tear people down offline, too. Which is very different from constructive criticism.

Especially since most badfic is written by very young teens.

The thing that stops me is that sort of mockery can have a chilling effect on other writers, not just the one being mocked, who probably will never see it. But other writers do read it and some might think, "Well, I could easily have written that crossover/summary/tagset/turn of phrase."

And some writers' muses drop dead pretty easily. It doesn't take much. The writer's ego can be ridiculously sensitive. I have seen writers driven from fandoms due to too much "well-meaning" interference.

Anything that results in less fiction written is, to my mind, a bad thing, even if it's not fiction I would personally enjoy. I guarantee you someone out there would love it.

It seems pretty pointless to possibly kill stories just for mockery's sake. So I don't do it, even though, God, it's tempting sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Psst, This is the place you want to go: http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/

They have a regular thread for posting precisely that sort of thing, in a place where the writer is unlikely to find it. Best yet, it's anonymous. Just don't expect everyone to agree with you. They are just as likely to critique your critique as agree with you, so if you can dish it out, but not take it, you'll likely have a very bad time.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
How come nobody said "Do it faggot!"
Am disappoint in FS.
