Oh man I have been over this way too many times with other people to want to go over it again.

tl;dr the situation in which I'd actually use this tactic would be for problem students or students who were habitually not doing their work (and thus wasting my time).

I will bet good money that none the people acting so horrified by your alleged lack of sympathy/teaching skill have ever once faced a typical classroom, much less had to deal with the type of disruptive, disengaged student you're describing.

Much less in a job where all of the discipline is left to them, no. Not having the option of sending anyone to the principal's office is an extra special level of kids knowing they're going to get away with everything if they have a teacher who can't handle them.

When I taught younger kids, this actually meant they'd try to hit me until I did something about it.
