I'm in a book club, but I hate it. I'm not making friends, the book isn't that good, people are flakey and self-interested and boring, and I'm constantly getting interrupted and made fun of for having opinions (thought out ones, I do actually read the book). Everyone else in the club is like "we're friends now! Look at how well we've gotten to know each other!" and it's a joke. Nobody in there knows me. Nobody's even tried.

I joined a book club and I've generally liked the books. But the other people in the book club always want to complain about how awful kids these days are, how they're stupid and annoying and don't care about the right things, and I hate it. When I try to stand up for my younger friends, they just talk over me :(

That's the sort of thing I'm talking about. Some people in my group get to derail discussion or make it about certain topics, but when I do the same thing, I get interrupted or made fun of for being ranty. If people aren't going to respect your point of view, why stick around?

Good question! We discuss the last chapter of the book this week at long last. I am not going to elect to re-up. I really wanted this to work out, but it hasn't.

Good to hear. No sense in continuing something that you're not enjoying. I hope you find a better club. :)

Oh man, I was in a book club like that. I ended up no longer attending but staying on the emailing list for the material. It took them like a year to realise I was a dead contact?

But the whole point of it was an advertisement to meet people with similar interests and make friends and it was just...two loud people saying what they thought the book was about then browbeating the rest of us into agreeing.
