Wat. Did we even read the same books?

Yes, he comes onto her, but Dany considers it for a hell of a long time before deciding he's not ever going to work for her; it's not like it wasn't on her radar. Beyond that, it wasn't out of character for her to want to be with older men either... Jorah wasn't just perving out without context, since all of the men she sleeps with are older.

Plus, he's not creepy about it in the least! Just sad and pathetic and pining like dumb teenager. He tries to kiss her once and then backs off, the rest of the time he just does his best to be a loyal knight and advisor, and secretly mopes about the fact that she doesn't want him.

The only thing different about show Jorah is that he's better looking than book Jorah. Otherwise, it's being acted exactly how the books portrayed it, imo.

Nowadays, guys can't suffer rejection ungracefully without being branded a Nice Guy.

spoilerrrrs.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-24 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
But he doesn't suffer it ungracefully (in the books, obviously). Dany basically tells him to fuck off and not come back after she finds out he was paid to find her and report on her activities, which he then stopped doing as soon as he actually found her. Jorah was more than prepared to stay where he was and continue to advise her despite the initial situation, and despite the fact that she didn't want him as a lover.

And when she tells him to gtfo he just leaves quietly.

I seriously think people are reading something that just isn't there.

DA

Like I said below, I think a lot of people's view of Jorah is tainted by fandom's habit of turning him ito textbook example of a Nice Guy who got friendzoned. Which is a shame, because he's not that at all.

Sorry, I was actually in your corner there. What I meant by ungracefully was just.. generally being upset? There's this idea that someone being upset or shaken up by rejection in any fashion means they're an entitled Nice Guy piece of shit. I personally think Jorah's a damn nice guy, in the non-caps sense.

Well that's how it is. Guys are either 'nice guys', 'dudebros' or 'neckbeards'.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh right. Silly me, how could I forget.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Unless they're attractive, in which case it's different. The secret is about how Jorah's attractiveness is effectively causing a short-circuit in this system.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that. I wish people who pull that crap got some perspective.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. However in your case they can be MRA entitled whiners about "misandry"

This, at least for the show. Haven't read the books yet.

Jorah doesn't really act all that creepy towards her iirc. The fandom's the one turning him into a textbook example of a Nice Guy. He respects her boundaries and doesn't hold her not returning his feelings against her. Sure, he pines and still wants her, but I don't see how that makes him creepy. Unless pining is creepy now.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. And unless the show seriously starts to deviate from the books in this area, he continues to just be a sad, pathetic, lovelorn man for the foreseeable future.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope not, if the show turns him into that then I'm done with it. There's a lot about the show that I don't care for, but that would be the last straw for me. It's bad enough I have to deal with this shit in the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason this comment made me feel really bad for Dany. Just once, can't there be an older man in her life who doesn't want into her pants or vice versa? Even her big brother wanted to bang her. The closest thing she's got to a platonic male ally/protector is her freaking dragon.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure Ser Barristan doesn't want to bang her.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-25 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
This, for sure.

Although I'm pretty sure we can all blame GRRM for everyone in Westeros wanting to pork 13 year olds.

I strongly suspect that most of the thousands of Unsullied won't be trying to get into her pants.

I 100% agree with you. I do not see Jorah as a creep. I think he is deceitful about his initial motives for attaching himself to her as an advisor, but I think his regard for her and his loyalty and his belief that she would make a good ruler are legitimate. I think Dany can be as angry as she'd like at Jorah for lying to her but not for having feelings for her and I don't understand why so many people think she should be.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
The main difference in Jorah and Dany's relationship in the show is Dany's age shift, imo. It's being acted pretty close to the books' portrayal, but the fact that book!Dany was 13 when she met Jorah adds a level of skeeve (from our modern-Earth readerly perspective) that's just not there with show!Dany who is clearly an adult, if a young one.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-25 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but the fact that this seems to be true of every single dude she meets kind of removes the skeeve factor from Jorah and ....well, puts it squarely on GRRM, don't you think?

What I'm saying is it's not fair to single Jorah out for that, if we're talking book Dany.

MINOR BOOK 5 SPOILER

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Book Jorah is definitely creepy. When he met Tyrion in a brothel, he was feeling up some blond chick. I can't help but think that the implication was that he was looking for a Daenerys substitute to get laid with...

Re: MINOR BOOK 5 SPOILER

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-25 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
He was also at that point tossed out on his ass by Dany, unable to return to Westeros because he was in debt/wanted for treason, and neck deep in a wine barrel. It's supposed to illustrate that he's hitting rock bottom, albeit in a pretty stereotypical way.

Also at that point in the books Dany is 16 and has already been pregnant, so it's fairly safe to assume that seeing her as a sexual being is something that's not out of the question for Jorah.

Re: MINOR BOOK 5 SPOILER

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Spoilers, I guess:

But he has a type, to which Dany fits. When Dany asks him what his second wife looked like in Book 2, he tells her "why, a bit like you, Khaleesi." Which is when Dany realizes that Jorah wants her the way a man wants a woman, the way Drogo wanted her. And she wasn't skeeved or creeped out at all. It was my impression she was sad for him, as she considered and then discarded his potential as her lover. So if he was feeling up some blonde later on, it's not necessarily because of Dany (although I wouldn't call Dany blonde, she's more white-haired) but because the blonde fits his preferred type of lover.

So... if you had a crush on a celebrity and found a prostitute who looked a lot like them it would make you creepy if you fucked them? I actually think that feeling up a (probably paid) lookalike subsitute is one of the nicer things the guys in those books do when they want to fuck a woman...
