When has too much time passed to confront someone?

This is long, as it was originally an LJ entry but I decided to post it here.


Several years ago I had a fandom friend I'll call Jackie. For a long time she was my go to person, but then she started trying to figure out some things, and it changed her. Suddenly when we did talk, she wanted to keep things strictly fandom/entertainment. It was understandable initially, but it got to the point where she took it a bit too far. One day I found out another fandom friend of mine was dying. I called Jackie in tears, and after a few minutes Jackie just said, "I'm sorry, but I'm actually roleplaying right now, can we talk later?"

Initially I was too shocked to say anything, then I just tried to forgive and forget, but of course the forgetting part was near impossible, and even though we stayed friends for a few years after that, there was definitely a little friction and awkwardness, largely because of this.

I often wonder if I should have said something - but when would it have been too late? I almost brought it up a few years after the fact, but I backed out. I had mixed feelings, and still do - part of me thinks she would have felt horrible, and we might have even been able to salvage our friendship, but another part of me thinks she would've just been defensive and not really understood, and it would've ended badly. I'm also not sure how much of that reaction was her going through her own problems and not really having any mental energy to deal with mine, and how much of it was showing her true colors. :/

Here's my question - how late do you think is too late to bring things like this up? A few months? Years? Have you ever brought up old drama, or did you just assume it wasn't worth it? In my case it definitely IS too late (and wouldn't serve much purpose), I'm just curious about other people's thoughts.

SA - I should add this isn't the only time she pulled shit, it was just the... stinkiest shit, so to speak. There were other things besides this.

I tend not to bring things like that up unless they explicitly deny to me that they have ever done something like that. Still not a very classy move of me usually.

Something a bit weird happened several times over the last couple of years: a newcomer in fandom would start reading my fics, commenting, start discussions; hey you like my fics and I like your comments and we like each other's ideas, great, let's be friends! them almost as soon as we became fandom friends, would stop commenting altogether.
Any thoughts of this phenomenon?

I've seen people claim to be "SJW in a good way" and get all upset when other people look down on them for it, and it left me wondering.
I always thought that the "warrior" part could only be pejorative, as in, fighting windmills, not because they care for the cause but just to have the high moral ground and make themself look good, so, really, nothing to be proud about. And that the "proper" term for someone for whom social equality does matter was instead "activist".

How common do you think it is for people to give their own fics kudos and bookmarks and stuff? Either by logging out and leaving guest kudos or by using socks or something.

Sometimes I see fics get kudos immediately after they're posted, or I'll see a fic suddenly gain several kudos in rapid succession, even though the fandom is extremely slow and the rate of gaining kudos is always glacial. Depending on the fandom, I'm sometimes even suspicious when short fics (think 1000 words) get significantly more kudos than longer fics (10,000+ words) of comparable quality.

Am I just being a dick for being suspicious of this kind of activity? =X

Journalists who covered death threats to pro-Gamergate individuals?

This thread is a request. I'm looking for any news source, online or offline, that a): covered at least one death threat to an individual supporting the Gamergate movement (like Totalbiscuit or Boogie) and b): is an actual, reliable news source, not a font of hatred towards women. I'm not necessarily asking for a positive tone--"that Yiannopoulos asshole got a death threat" is probably preferable to "that sainted hero Yiannopoulos got a death threat," seeing as how Yiannopoulos is a total asshole.

I want to be clear that I am not looking for any more information about Gamergate itself. At all. I just wish everyone involved in it from every angle would shut the hell up, or at least drop the tag and address issues as they come without trying to work them into some vast conspiracy.

[I typed up a massive explanation of why I'm looking for this anyway, but then I realized that was essentially getting me involved in this mess, and I really don't want to be involved. I've deleted it all, and I'll try to avoid explaining anything.]

I've got two stories I'm planning to work on (not complete, just work on); one's a YA zombie apocalypse with a side of queer romance while the second is a much darker story about a young man and the darkness that's seeking him out. While I was on a walk to day I passed a house where a little (very)blond boy was running around with a plastic Captain America shield "battling" another little dark-haired boy with a white and red toy rifle. All I could think was "Awww! Baby Steve and Bucky!" I don't know if they were actually pretending to be Captain America and The Winter Soldier, but it was adorable. It was even funnier because the blond boy was running around energetically, hoisting his shield and grabbing other toy guns while the dark-haired one mostly walked and made a show of aiming.

What sort of things have you guys seen in RL that related to fandom?

Historical Fiction vs. RPF

Where do you draw the line (if a line needs to be drawn) between historical fiction and RPF? Is it disrespectful or invasive of the privacy of their descendants for historical personages to be characters in fiction?

I just came across this argument, and I found it...bizarre, to say the least:

I never have liked RPF, most especially of living people because it feels incredibly disrespectful and like an invasion of privacy. When it comes to dead people, if you want to tell the truth, write a biography but if you're writing fiction, give them a fictional name FFS, even if it's based on someone real.
