Why would you want to watch it, though? I mean, I feel like this kind of comedy thrives on second hand embarrassment, so I guess I wonder what you'd watch it for? (I can't watch it either, not anything similar).

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
They might have friends who are into it? Or even just feeling kind of left out that other people obviously enjoy that kind of humor and they don't. Like wishing you could eat cheese when you're allergic to dairy.

It just seems so tiring watching something you dislike because of friends.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Well, if they could manage their secondhand embarrassment enough to watch the show, maybe they'd enjoy it.

But honestly it seems weird you'd even need to ask why anyone might not want to be left out of a popular fandom. It might not bother you, but it's not difficult to see why it might bother others.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, it's pretty bad second-hand embarrassment, particularly in the first season. It gets a little better later (before the show got bad).

See, I had this issue with a lot of the show's humor but there are different kinds of humor with different characters which is why I stuck it out. And around where I am (season 2/3) a lot of the jokes seem less harsh, just because there's a warmth between a lot of the characters, as nonsensical as that affection may be when their boss is such a clueless dick.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This sums it up really well I think.

Slow verbal processing FTW! It gives my brain "this is a joke" cues, and allows me to keep up with the dialogue without my brain freaking out.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I really like laugh tracks when they're executed well

Unfortunately I don't think anyone's executed them well for like 15 years, but they genuinely add a great energy when they're done well

Honestly I dislike comedy to begin with, and the whole office setting makes me want to kill things..

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people like keeping up with popular shows so they can understand all the pop culture references people make. It's pretty common, actually.

To be honest, it's pretty doable as long as you don't watch scenes with Michael in them

If your second hand embarrassment is that bad then how do you watch anything ever?

Shockingly, there are a lot of things out there that don't rely on cringe humour to tell a story.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Wtf? I can't do second hand embarrassment either and I watch stuff all the time. It seems to be the foundation of American sitcoms and there have been some British comedies like that (the original Office, being the most obvious). But it isn't common in anything else I've ever seen, and even in the programmes that include it, it usually isn't every episode. We watch The Big Bang Theory a lot and I've only seen it in that a few times in something like 8? 9? 10? years.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The Office - and in particular, the British version/first couple seasons of the American version - have to be some of the most intensely cringe-humor-centric things ever made

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
... because not everything is like The Office? Not even all humor is like The Office.
meredith44: Can't talk, I'm reading (Default)

[personal profile] meredith44 2017-02-12 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't tend to watch comedies because of the second hand embarrassment issues I have. I only enjoy comedies like Better Off Ted because that humor tends not to be cringe humor. I appreciate that others like it, but it so isn't for me.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
The Office is one of the most second-hand embarrassment inducing things I've ever watched.
soldatsasha: (Default)

[personal profile] soldatsasha 2017-02-13 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I managed to get through iirc half of the first episode of The Office before I had to watch something else. It was just too much, I have a very hard time handling second hand embarrassment and humiliation-based humor.

But, shockingly enough, few comedies rely on that as the majority of their humor! I mean, to name just a few of the vast slew of shows that don't rely on it as a staple, there's HIMYM, The IT Crowd, Big Bang Theory, Parks & Rec, Brooklyn 99, The Simpsons, Futurama, That 70s Show, and King of the Hill.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, but I loved the Office -- you just have to keep a hand at the remote and fast forward the scenes you can tell are gonna be unbearable.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it difficult to watch that kind of humor too, OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The second hand embarrassment on this show gets me BAD but I've been watching it anyway. But then, I started the show because I wanted a fluffy sitcom I wasn't invested in at all as kind of background comedy noise, so it works for me; if there's a really bad scene I just ignore it till it's over.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I get bad second hand embarrassment from all sorts of things, so I feel you OP. One that comes to mind is in one of the Jaws movies when Brody is shooting his gun like a crazy man and then some surfer is like, 'Dude, it's just blue fish!'

I always have to skip that scene, I cringe so hard.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)

Can someone explain this to me? I'm not up on my Sherlock fandom, and tried google but couldn't find anything :(

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's about that fic where Sherlock and John are movie stars? I can't remember the name of it though.
nanslice: (Default)

[personal profile] nanslice 2017-02-12 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Close, it's a movie in a fic that was inspired by that fic in which they were movie stars. Or something like that.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god that one. One of those "why are the Most Popular Fics in any given fandom always such shit?" moments

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's honestly way more interesting to me to try to figure out why people are responding to a particular fic, rather than doing the good ol Fans Dumb So What routine.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess. AUs and misery fics ("Alone on the Water" for instance) seem to be very popular.
It certainly has relatively little to do with quality of writing/characterisation.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
But it almost definitionally has to have some quality that strikes an emotional chord, which is what's interesting. And strikes that chord better than other things do.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Excuse you, Performance In A Leading Role was very well written. If you don't like the idea of an actors AU, that's your business, but that doesn't mean it's a bad fic. It did some pretty great things with its premise, and the writing was honestly pretty excellent, at least by fanfic standards.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
"at least by fanfic standards" wow. you're really not making your case here. Writing is writing is writing.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Not really, and if you weren't being willfully combative you would acknowledge that.

I mean, it's been pretty well established that even the best fanfic is often not conducive to being turned into original fiction. Because "good writing" by original fiction standards involves crafting the building blocks for the story and then crafting the story from those blocks, while "good" fanfic writing is free to skip over a large chunk of the first step and move right on to the second. In that regard, I will very rarely evaluate how well written fanfic is in direct comparison to original fiction, because the comparison is unfair to both modes of writing.

Among other things, Performance In A Leading Role is well paced and well developed, with snappy and effective dialogue, consistent and likable characterizations, and a nicely filled out ensemble cast. But would it stand alone as original fiction? Maybe, but not with flying colors. But since there are very few novel length fics out there that would make truly great stand alone novels without extensive rewriting, that's hardly a valid point of criticism where fanfic is concerned.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but...

Because "good writing" by original fiction standards involves crafting the building blocks for the story and then crafting the story from those blocks, while "good" fanfic writing is free to skip over a large chunk of the first step and move right on to the second.

IMO, this rather leads back to ayrt's point about the implication that "fanfic standards" are, shall we say, less rigorous than original fiction standards. So saying that something is "honestly pretty excellent, at least by fanfic standards" still sounds like a huge (and necessary!) qualifier to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
So saying that something is "honestly pretty excellent, at least by fanfic standards" still sounds like a huge (and necessary!) qualifier to me.

I don't know about AYRT, but when I'm talking about how well written fic is I always make sure to clarify that I'm measuring it by fanfic standards. Whether I'm speaking about the best fic I've ever read, or a fic that I didn't like. I just think it's a qualification that needs to be made in order for everyone to know exactly how the work is being evaluated. And I do this for exactly the reasons that AYRT underlined in their comment. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. But having read the fic AYRT is defending, I'm definitely inclined to agree with them that it's a well written fic. Not the best Sherlock fanfic I've read or anything, but definitely one that deserved its ample popularity.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
What's 'To a Stranger'? Or don't I want to know?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
http://archiveofourown.org/works/5387594

You don't.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a popular long Sherlock fanfic called Performance In A Leading Role. In the fic, John and Sherlock are actors who get cast to play the romantic leads in a movie called To A Stranger. To A Stranger is completely fictional, but Ang Lee is written as the director, which grounds To A Stranger a bit, making it feel like a feasible follow up to his real life work on Brokeback Mountain.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Do not agree in the slightest. Sorry, OP. I know most people rec that fic as one of the best in the fandom, but it's one of the reasons I hate AUs. Because it is pretty well written, but has nothing to do with Sherlock. So I was several chapters and thousands of words in, when I went up to get a snack and wondered: why am I reading this? This isn't Sherlock fanfic. Which is fine of course, but not what I wanted. As for the movie in the fic, it sounded sort of pretentious and boring tbh.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
RPF in disguise mostly.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I sort of thought so, and it holds up for all the random famous people who show up. But for MF & BC? They're very different from their characters. Granted, the John and Sherlock in the fic are very different from the canon characters as well. But they don't really seem to match up with MF & BC either.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really not. It's just a Sherlock AU, that's all. For some reason the fact that it's a Sherlock AU in which John and Sherlock are actors seems to really be breaking people's brains. But that's truly all it is.

In fact, the author stated quite explicitly, back when the story was being posted, that it was not RPF. Also, there's this, which I'm quoting from her LJ page:

So you can imagine that more than one reader had a bit of a flashback when Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were each other's dates to the Emmys. [...] I was, however, relieved to see people saying "Well, that isn't how I pictured it, because I imagined Sherlock and John, not these two." I'm glad to have that distinction preserved, because it was hard work keeping Performance firmly out of the RPF category. A lot of real actors make appearances in it (John is friends with Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connolly, Natalie Portman talks to them at a party, etc) but the two main characters are that...characters, and not meant to be skins over the actors who play them.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
... yeah, it's still RPF, tho.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
How so?

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea how you are coming to this incorrect conclusion.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're crazy at all, OP. I think pretty much everyone who enjoyed mad_lori's fic wishes they could watch To A Stranger (and there are thousands of us because that fic was fantastic).

The only place we potentially differ is that I don't really want to see Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch in the roles. I want to see the John and Sherlock who exist in Performance play the roles of Mark and Benjamin. Which is, of course, utterly impossible. But I see no reason to let that stop me from wishing it could exist. :)

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, thank you for reminding me about this, OP. I stumbled onto this fic early in my time in the Sherlock fandom and it was just so wonderful and fun. I was in giddy awe of all the cool stuff people in the Sherlock fandom were making, and this fic was a great example of that.

So much of that wonderful verve has gone out of the fandom now, IMO, but it's nice to remember what it was like back in the heyday.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember that fic very well, but I do remember thinking that the film they're making seems to be much more cliched and mediocre than the author and characters would want you to believe...? But the whole film industry was full of obligatory movie references in all obligatory places, with no random choices whatsoever (all directors were famous directors doing exactly those kinds of films which they were famous for, nobody made any mistakes, nothing was surprising, no names were mentioned which weren't very mainstream, etc; it was a bit annoying in places, especially ebcause teh author took great pleasure in explaining and listing all references). I did like the fic when I read it, but I really believe that "To a Stranger" will always be a much better film on paper/within the fic than it could ever be in real life...

I read this book as a kid that was a supposedly true story of an early 19th century case of possession. It took place in Canada. It was really weird and I only vaguely remember most of it, but there were these graphic sex scenes of the ghost having sex with the girl of the house. It was all told from people observing it, like they saw the form under the sheets but there was nobody there...

Anyway. yeah, pretty sure that was my first kink discovery and really kicked off the ghost/possession kink.

Agreed.

Though I just looked them up and they were way more basic than I remember them being. My kid brain thought they were super detailed and crazy awesome, when really they just kinda look like a shell.

Also great, the Ewok village set my cousins had. Sadly, that was never one that made it down to us in the hand-me-down parade.

I don't remember seeing these when I was a kid, but oh, man, if I had, I would've wanted these, too. Especially that Crystal Castle. I just liked toy houses/buildings in general when I was little, be they Barbie Dream Houses or the Playskool dollhouse (both of which I had) or the Fisher Price homes/main street/etc. Stuff like that.

Heck, I even took a Fisher Price kitchenette I had and turned that into an apartment complex for my dolls :p.

I wanted a Barbie plane just to pretend it was a spaceship and my dolls weren't naked, they were dressed in light pink spandex spacesuits! Dreamhouse and camper van I could and did build replicas out of carboard boxes, but plane/spaceship? nope; still bummed about this one.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I was jealous of friends that had those. But I was jealous of friends who had any of the big playsets because my parents never bought those.

I got the MLP castle but only because I bought it myself at a neighbor's garage sale.

I had the middle one! The best part was the wolf=head part, it was a microphone thing with a spring inside and you talked into it and sounded all echo-y.

I had a Barbie house too (this one) and probably used it more, because I did play with dolls a lot and that was better scaled to them.

But I definitely played with my Star Wars micro machines on Skull Mountain too!

Don't write off the idea of getting them for yourself now. My mom wouldn't let me have a My Pet Monster when I was a kid, so I bought one for myself when I was in my twenties. It was VERY satisfying. His name is Ralph and I still have him.

I never saw/played with any of these, but I had a friend who had a bunch of Polly Pockets and knock-offs of them, and they were AWESOME. I wanted them so bad.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I remember wanting these as well as a Barbie dreamhouse and an American Girl doll. I ended up buying the doll for myself as an adult and it felt pretty sweet to finally own one.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I was clearly a blessed child, as we had a Castle Greyskull *and* a Barbie Dream House (the latter was given to us by a neighbor who got it from a garage sale and was generally home to either Ninja Turtles or dinosaurs depending on my mood...my sister and I weren't big Barbie kids). We also had a My Little Pony castle and a Superfriends Hall of Justice.

[personal profile] spacebabie 2017-02-13 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved that castle. I had the She-ra one and it was so pretty and there were clear goblets and a gorgeous bed...I think my brother had the others. I had the pony stuff too and say what you will about the cartoons, but the toys were better back then than compared to they. They were 3d and solid these new pony castles look 2d and you just blow on it and they fall over.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-19 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
I had Crystal Castle, too. I got into Princess of Power when they were being discontinued, and I remember trying to get my parents to buy me as much of it as was still available before it was all gone forever...

Unrelated, but I did not know here and she looks scarily like anolder version of a friend of mine.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret is the first I'm ever hearing of her, but I don't think your reasons are silly. It's always sad when people struggle with things like addiction, and when they die in such tragic ways as well.

And many of us have those celebrities whose deaths hit us unusually hard. Nothing wrong with that. You're entitled to your feelings.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read that she had a cocaine addiction so bad that it had destroyed her nose and eaten holes in her mouth. Christ, I thought my sugar addiction was bad.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's what cocaine does. I respect that she went public about it (and the multiple surgeries needed) to warn other people.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
It did, her septum collapsed. There are photos of it online that's scary stuff. She had plenty of money to have it rebuilt, of course, but even so...

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Rich or poor, a life is still a life. It's not silly to feel sad at the death of someone you thought was a nice person, regardless of their socio-economic status or nationality.

Yeah, I know what that's like - I got the impression she was a really sweet person and it's a shame when drugs may have been a contributing factor to a person's ill health and subsequent demise.

That's James Spader?

Dang. He ain't half bad-looking in that gif.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, honey. He wasn't always Ray Reddington.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, well, in my case, I've heard of "The Blacklist" and his character on there, but I've never actually seen it. Just saw him in previews for it on TV.

I honestly don't know that I'm all that familiar with Spader's work in general. I've heard his name, of course, and seen him pop up on TV sometimes, but that's all I can recall offhand. I may well have seen something he was in and just never really connected the dots.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)

Okay, looking at his film/TV history, I completely forgot he was on "The Office" later in its run, so there's something I've seen him in.

Can you please these movies? I know Pretty in Pink is the first one, and Secretary is the last, but the one before last...has me curious. All of them, really.

Thanks for the gifs, btw. :)

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
The second one is Less Than Zero (and yes, that is a young RDJ he's cradling in said gif). I want to say the second to last is Sex Lies and Videotape.

You are correct! (A very good movie, btw -- Andie MacDowell is genuinely good in it, and Spader is amazing and vulnerable and perfect)

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Less than Zero is the one where he's a drug dealer right? And RDJ or someone is headed off to college, and someone's been partying too hard...something like that, right? Gets very dramatic.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for reminding me how much I adored James Spader in the 80s.

Okay, I didn't particularly need reminding, but yummmmm.

MTE. Rest in peace, young James Spader.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty in Pink James Spader is fiiiiiiiine. But frankly I would still hit season 5 Boston Legal James Spader, so am not an unbiased observer.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Despite being well down the 'aging poorly' path during Boston Legal, Alan Shore was still absurdly appealing in ways other than the physical.

His voice does for me what Alan Rickman's voice seems to do for others.

Unf.

As someone from the 80s, I have to say: those shoulder pads are relatively subtle. There were way more aggressive versions out there (I might have owned a few).

Yesssssssss, he was so very, very pretty, lounging around in that loose, white suit, omg....

I never got that movie, though, re: the two main stars dating. He asks her what they should do, should they go hang out with her friends, 'go look under a rock' and she...stays on the date with him. I mean - at that exact moment i would have been telling him to fuck off and going home (or out with my actual friends).

She was all 'i support my friends!' but let him talk like that, that always really bothered me.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah some of their interactions didn't really gel for me either. I THINK it was supposed to be him trying to be awkwardly funny and not knowing how to be around her, but it did come off assholish.

I can't help liking him though...blame my huge crush on Andrew McCarthy (I even watched that tv romance movie where he was a cowboy. More than once.)
tabaqui: (Default)

[personal profile] tabaqui 2017-02-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I...have never seen that.

I did *like* him, mostly, and i loved him in St. Elmo's Fire and other stuff. I just didn't like how unthinking they made that character.

It should have been the three of them, really, because it was obvious that Spader's character had a crush on basically everybody.

Damn, now i want fic.

I'm still a little cheesed she didn't go with Duckie. He was way more interesting than Blane "That's a major appliance, not a name!" McDonnagh. I know the people involved with the movie had their reasons for not having her and Duckie hook up, but given that they are stupid-ass reasons, I've elected to ignore them. [/Samuel L. Jackson mode} She had way more chemistry with Duckie than she ever did with Blane.

I hate Josh more and more each episode. I hate Rebecca for the reasons I'm supposed to hate Rebecca, which is the whole point of Rebecca. I love Valencia and Heather more and more, though, and that makes me happy.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Paula a lot at times throughout the second season, but then she was right back to the unhealthy old patters in the season finale.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Meant to say "patterns"

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Paula season 1 versus Paula season 2 was such a big jump. She went from someone who was more then willing to do outlandish and dangerous things to someone who was extremely grounded with a lot of common sense.

I'll be interested to see how they handle her in season 3, I think it would make sense if she backtracked a bit because that can happen a lot and I don't believe she fully took on all her issues.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's the thing, Rebecca has always been awful but Josh just continues to get worse so I think it's easier to ignore Rebecca.

I'm looking forward to more Valencia and Heather next season. I also hope we get more Hector because he can be randomly hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I always liked Josh a lot, but I think the writing in season 2 did him no favours. It's like they took all his flaws and ramped them up while also forgetting what made him likable before. His portrayal was a lot less balanced than in the first season.

I mostly don't get the fandom's love for Greg, though. I liked him fine, but he wasn't any "better" for Rebecca than Josh and she wasn't any happier with him, so I don't get why people present him as the healthy, good option.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people I've encountered don't believe Greg is the right option unless both Greg and Rebecca work on themselves and then come back to each other later.

I lovvvveee Greg and I liked Greg/Rebecca more then I like Josh/Rebecca but that's not saying I wanted Greg/Rebecca to keep destroying each other. I liked their chemistry but I didn't want that same plot from season 1 to keep happening. I just wanted Greg on the show regardless, I didn't need him to be with Rebecca, I just like the character.

I feel you, OP.

I don't understand the Josh hate at all.

As for fandom being about shipping, well, fandom gonna ship, but I agree. I mean, I'm not necessarily above it, I think "Ooh, it'd be fun to see Bex hook up with [insert character] but people honest to God shipping in terms of what's gonna be endgame when the ultimate endgame is Rebecca actually taking the time to sit down with Dr. Akopian and address her issues head-on is...cringeworthy to say the least.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's near impossible to find a fandom where people don't care about ships, individual fans may not care but there will always be people shipping something. And Rebecca herself is so obsessed with who she ends up with (for very unhealthy reasons) that it becomes easy as an audience member to wonder yourself.

As far as Rebecca hate versus Josh hate goes, I think the thing about Rebecca is she's been messy since episode 1, but we are supposed to know about her inner thoughts and feelings a bit more then we know about Josh's. I tend to go back and forth with her, sometimes I feel really bad for her and other times I'm appalled by her behavior and don't think mental illness is an excuse for her action.

Josh was a bit more of a genuine nice guy in season 1, he had his problems, but it wasn't until season 2 that you really see that he's just as much of a mess as Rebecca is. A lot of what we saw of Josh before was through Rebecca's idealization of him, so I feel like some fans are just coming around to finding things they hate about him, if he had been presented a messy person from the beginning people might be more willing to forgive like they do with Rebecca.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just salty that Nipsey Hustle never came back. His apologies to his bitches are still my favorite part of the episodes I've seen so far.

Spoilers.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-12 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay.

Let's talk about the reveal in the finale that Rebecca had had a fling (possible sexual and therefore adulterous?) with a married law professor, and ended up institutionalized for a little while.

I think that took something away from the character. It was better when she seemed like someone who had always been neurotic but had also always been levelheaded, and moving to California for Josh was the first extreme thing she had done for love. Or at all.

Re: Spoilers.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it makes sense though when you consider one of the things Rebecca first did when she moved was flush her meds. She had obviously had problems before that were known.

I think it's possible who she was in New York was a response to that event as well, she went too far, but instead of realizing this and working on her issues she just repressed a lot. And that worked well enough to get her through law school and make her a successful lawyer, but since she never addressed her underlying issues in a real way, it was just a matter of time before she broke down again.

Mental illness can sometimes be a cycle, and I say this is as someone who is mentally ill (not to the extremes Rebecca is, but I know how it is to seem to be doing well only to break down again.)
