You mean like that episode where the aliens infiltrate the British government in order to pull this huge con so that England will request to the UN that they be allowed the use of their... like 2 nukes (because the aliens want the nukes blown up or something)? As opposed to heading over to the USA or Russia (with their slightly larger stockpiles, and slightly readier access to them)? Yeah, that was pretty funny.

They wanted to cause World War 3 and reduce the planet to radioactive rubble and sell it off as spaceship fuel.

I kind of love it when they have American characters played by non-American actors on Who. The results are always hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
omg yes, it's a straight up riot.

Basically the only exception to the lol "Americans" rule on DW is Canton Everett Delaware, because he is FREAKING MARK SHEPPARD.

I love it when "Americans" show up in ANY foreign media tbh. And since they're Texan like a solid 50% of the time it's even better, being Texan myself.

With "Daleks of Manhattan," I was so thrown by the American accents that it took me a while to figure out that some of the accents probably weren't supposed to sound as fake as they did.

It is kind of hilarious in a fun way.

Although I'm an American, the "lol America" jokes on DW always highly amused me. The Master trolling President Douchebag Winters, Master!Obama forgetting his majikkal deffisset salooshun, that black American newsreader lady who was so fucking epic with her wearily businesslike reports on bizarre alien shit, etc.

Although the once-hysterical JESUS CHRIST IT'S AN AMERICAN WITH A GUN GET IN THE CAR running gag from the season 6 two-parter has gone a bit sour now due to RL :(

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I love that news anchor lady. The should do a whole episode where the story is told through her news updates, illustrated by phone-videos and security cam photos of the Doctor saving us from aliens.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
The lol America shit in The Sound of Drums was great. My favorite was the college students or whoever they were supposed to be tuning into a 2 AM live broadcast all decked out in their letter jackets. Like you do.

And Trinity Wells! It's not officially an international incident on Doctor Who until she shows up to report on it.

I always adored the Britain-centricism in Doctor Who. It was goofy and conspicuous and made no sense, but I loved having that lens there because it was so unfamiliar to me. It made the show unique for me personally, when I contrasted it with the ultra-American Star Trek (another one of my favorite shows). Kind of similar to the Harry Potter series.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I would just like to put in a ditto to your comment because it sums up my opinion.

Also, the Brit-centrism is something that was just as much a part of old!Who back in the day. I used to find it amusing how all the big alien invasion events in Who all happened in Britain.

The universe is filled with British character actors.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
LOL at all the Americans in this thread being "amazed" by Brit-centrism.

Welcome to the real world, where other nations exist.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Judging by the comments I'd say it's more amused by the portrayals of Americans than amazed at the existence of Brit-centrism.

I know! Why is it so strange that a British show is Brit-centric when most American tv that I've seen barely acknowledges that the rest of the world exists?

I don't know what to say to this secret other than I find it...kind of sweet? It's just nice when people can recognise how centred on their own culture things can be, which I guess almost always only applies to the US and Brit media as they're the things likely to be consumed worldwide. I don't know, it was just nice for me seeing the reverse of what I sometimes experienced. As a Brit, growing up I sometimes thought "wait, what does that mean/that doesn't happen here/just generally WHAT!?" about some shows or films set in the USA. It actually never occurred to me it could happen the other way around, for many years! I dunno, it's New Year's Day here now so I might not be making any sense thanks to alcohol.

Same here, OP! It's just kind of delightful to watch something that's definitely not Americentric, and it makes me a bit more able to spot Americentrism when it pops up. A win all around.

I've sometimes felt just a wee bit melancholy about the fact that the Doctor so rarely came into my own country. Although I guess there are many worse examples, since he did pop up in Versailles and Provence (although, ahem! that church was actually in Auvers sur Oise? which isn't in Provence? anyway...) and Paris the 'City of Death'...

To be honest, I think the entire Internet is incredibly US-centric. Whenever I talk to an American online, they're always like, "So, which state do you come from?", as if it never occurred to them that people from other countries even had Internet access.
