Please explain to me why the SJWs DON'T stand for oppression, censorship, and thought-policing.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Please? I win the SJWs' Oppression Olympics so hard, but they scare the crap out of me, and am DNW DNW DNW DNW whenever I see one (or more b/c they travel in packs now) "crusading for teh cause." At the same time as they get all up against people for saying, you know, WORDS, they are causing the very same, very real, harm that they are "fighting" against by using, you know, offensive, defamatory, and inflammatory WORDS, against people who have gotten in their crosshairs. Some people who might actually belong to one of the umpty-million checkboxes-groups they have all created.

Convince me you're actually decent human beings, SJWs. Because from where I'm sitting, you're tin-plated despots who would see the whole world run down into the worst kind of tyrannical dictatorship that has ever existed.....At the same time claiming that is what you are trying to FIGHT. There are several examples of unelected governments throughout the known world who have done exactly the same thing. These were and are not good countries to live in.

The thing is, SJWs don't identify as SJWs except as in a defiant way. SJW is by definition a pejorative term. Most SJWs are convinced they're perfectly reasonable, and therefore would not self-identify as a SJW. So your request is unfortunately pretty pointless.

Re: Please explain to me why the SJWs DON'T stand for oppression, censorship, and thought-policing.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the important thing to remember here is that there's no official definition of SJWs, there's no official organization of SJWs, there's no official set of beliefs or practices that all SJWs have, that SJWs are not monolithic, and I don't think many people would identify as SJWs. It is, to a large extent, a label imposed on a pretty wide group of people and actions and attitudes.

And I think this kind of argument you're making relies on assuming that SJWs have a pretty consistent policy and plan of action, and I don't think that's true. I think what happens is some people object to some things and they respond to it in a whole lot of different ways, and sometimes those reactions are dumb and extremist. But I don't think that invalidates everything that anyone who could conceivably be called an SJW does or believes. It'd be better if people could take a more relaxed, more reasoned, more tolerant view in general - but I really don't think there's any kind of organized plan to exert dictatorial control over peoples' speech, it's much more a flexible and extremely disorganized network of people with a variety of individual reactions to a bunch of things.

I mean, seriously, the distance between anything that SJWs are doing or advocating and actual tyrannical oppressive states is pretty massive. It's not a great comparison. When we're talking about this we're talking about societal pressures, which are important and need to be taken seriously but they're not the same as political oppression or pressure.

The very definition of an SJW means they are pretty much what you described. That's why the term SJW is derogatory when people use it.

This is like calling upon assholes to come forth to convince you they're truly nice people. If they were truly nice people, they wouldn't be assholes.

Being pro-social justice =/= SJW.

People who harp on SJWs and insist they need to prove themselves or whatever are more fucking annoying than actual SJWs, I swear. At least I can ignore them when they get over zealous because they are typically confined to Tumblr. But anti-SJWs insist on puking their thoughts all over the internet, cluttering up forums that typically have no problems with SJWs with their "WHY DO SJWS SUCK SO MUCH" threads. Take your bullshit back to Tumblr.

No one needs to convince you of anything. Do your own digging to see what social justice and awareness has done if you are really interested. But, I think you are more interested in stirring up shit and being annoying.

That's the point of calling them SJWs, though. It's a negative term coined by the people who find them to be so far up their own asses that all they see is brown regardless. Man, though, I'm getting sick of the 'omgracistDisney' thing tumblr is constantly harping about lately. Yes, Disney is pretty shitty, but you're not helping yourself by intentionally leaving out movies or characters to make some point. Especially since your point is pretty much invalid when you're leaving out the things that invalidate it on purpose. Yikes.

They don't stand for those things because SJWs don't actually have any power or influence outside of tiny corners of the internet, and even in those tiny corners are largely derided and ignored with the exception of certain people who keep overreacting to them. So it's SJWs and anti-SJWs all hysterically overreacting to each other and the world in general while the rest of us sigh and chew aspirin.

Well the thing is that if someone is an asshole, they are an SJW. It's a pejorative that applies specifically to asshole crusaders. The more reasonable, nicer ones are social justice activists or a variety of other terms and titles, but SJW doesn't apply to them.

It would be a bit like asking "why do all robbers steal thing?" - because we only apply the term "robber" to someone who steals.

The more I read of this thread, the more obvious it becomes that you're just one of those idiots who are butthurt because they have the right to be offensive, obtuse little shits(throw in some statements about how being told not to say offensive things is totally like having paramilitary break into your home and kidnap/kill you). Pull an "it's a social experiment!" and I'll have BINGO.

To Anyone in the Kingdom Hearts Fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this was a pretty popular fanfic in the KH fandom back in the day, and I took a real trip on nostalgia lane when I found out today that it had been updated (and completed) for the first time in over six years starting in mid december. The entire fic has also undergone a lot of revisions and editing as well. Not sure if anyone here was a fan way back when, but I just thought I'd mention it

You know, speaking of KH, how the hell does Sora have a keyblade in KH3? He failed his test, so why would it appear to him and not Riku?

...Oh, but damn does that riding heartless thing look awesome.

This is a few days late and I doubt you'll even see this response but THANK YOU for mentioning this, I loved that fic when it was first being written and I reread the incomplete version many times so now I'm super excited to read the finished product ♥

Adaptations you hate because of interpretation, not because of suckiness

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just thinking about how much I hated the 2002 Hound of the Baskervilles movie, not because it was bad, but because I hated their version of Holmes, hated Holmes and Watson's relationship, and spent the whole time wanting Watson to punch Holmes in the nose and make him cry.

This reminded me of how the 1978 Superman persistently rubbed me the wrong way because of their interpretation of Lois Lane, even though I thought the movie itself was great. And how annoying the weird old-time Hollywood romance conventions were in the Laurence Olivier production of Henry V, even though it was pretty brilliant.

Any one else have other examples?

There's an adaptation of Mansfield Park that I had to shut off half way through because their Fanny was simply not Fanny. She was cute though.

And this isn't exactly the same type of thing but I also will never forgive the original Disney animated 101 Dalmatians movie for taking out one of my favorite characters (and giving the new name she loved to someone else! that's just adding insult to injury) and changing another one of my favorite characters from a female cat to a male cat.

So I don't watch MMA fighting (why would I) but some of my friends do. And last night there was one big collective cringe on my FB feed, so I looked it up.

Well, as one of my friends put it, "the UFC just glitched".

You can post your reaction gifs now.

btw if that link is dead let me know, UFC keeps taking the video down

Fannish Parents

[personal profile] sootyowl 2013-12-29 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom has started watching "Fairy Tail" on Netflix. She said she enjoys it, but is let down by "the drunken wizards." I have never watched it myself and I'm kinda perplexed of why she suddenly started watching it. I guess she likes anime more than I knew? (She also watched the FMA:B movie recently without prior knowledge of FMA:B... I still don't know why.)

What fannish things do your parents enjoy that surprise you?

To folks who have tumblr:

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it currently down for any of you? I've been trying to post a fic for someone but every time I try to go to my dash, I get nothing but 'Connecting...' and an endless wait symbol. Every other website I've tried has worked for me, so it's definitely not my internet connection.

I finally ignored someone on Tumblr.

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2013-12-29 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mostly on Tumblr for one small fandom, so I've never run into the issues with SJW and such other people have had. Today however there have been several posts on a fandom tag I track by the same person almost all of them complaining about how the girl characters introduced in the sequel are stupid and horrible.

If I'd hated the main characters as much this person I'd have stopped fucking watching.

Random stupid thought.

Rapunzel became Tangled, and The Snow Queen became Frozen.

…Now I’m wondering what the rest of the Disney animated canon would be called if those films had gotten similar title changes.

Incredibly touched, though... kinda feel guilty about it?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Basically my SO and I have been going through a rough time (which I have vented about a little here) and have mutually decided to live apart for awhile. Well, some friends of ours are getting married, and one of them messaged me about wedding invitations, and basically said some things that boiled down to "You're invited, and welcome to bring her or anyone else with you, but I'm not sending her one."

...Which pretty much means if she had to choose sides, she'd choose me. And I mean, I wrote back and said that just to be clear, it was absolutely not necessary, and neither of us would ever dare make a scene at a friend's wedding, and even if we'd really honestly broken up, seeing my friends happily getting married surrounded by all their friends would more than make up for any discomfort...

...But it's still really kind of nice to think that someone might choose me over someone else. I don't think that's ever happened before. I'm extremely introverted and don't tend to make friends easily, so usually "my friends" are "my SO's friends" or "my brother's friends" or "my coworkers that I don't hate" and once I'm not with a particular SO or my brother's not around or I've changed jobs, I never see them again, because they weren't really my friends to begin with. In this case, I *have* known my friend longer, but it still sort of surprises me that *everyone* doesn't like SO better, since that's how it usually goes.

Still feel guilty for being pleased, though, since I really wouldn't ever have made anyone choose sides, particularly for their special day.
