That's true enough I suppose, but I feel like all the main characters in Final Fantasy VI were all fantastically written men and women, and are probably some of the most relate-able characters in a JRPG I've played.

Not entirely sure where I wanted to go with that, guess I wanted to just point out that I would definetly not call Terra/Tina weak or useless or dependent on men; well maybe at towards the beginning, but I feel she quickly overcame this. IDK, I guess I'm just wondering what the purpose of using Terra/Tina as the image for this secret, just feels like a disconnect. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it, it is a nice picture of her.

I'll take one of the less extreme examples, from "The Rise and Fall of Final Fantasy" (which seems to have become where every conversation about FF begins, in the same sense that every conversation about food critics begins with that monologue from Ratatouille):

"As the cast member closest to the axis of the main story, and as the first to receive a formal introduction, Terra is a strong candiate for the designation of Final Fantasy VI's main protagonist -- which would make her the first instance of a female Final Fantasy hero. Unfortunately, Terra more or less remains a JRPG heroine, which is a much different creature than a JRPG hero. It's hard to belive that a magic-flinging, flying, human/phantom beast hybid with the power to change the course of a war could act like such a mawkish little titmouse out of battle, requiring the emotional support of (much less powerful) men in order to function, and constantly soliloquizing about how she is too different to ever find true love. (Not that female characters shouldn't ever be allowed to express emotion or vulnerability, but this particular female character is a demihuman sorceress with extensive military training; not a damn schoolgirl.)"

Never mind that she's snapping out of brainwashing that apparently lasted most of her life. Never mind that this is the first time since infancy that she's had the opportunity to form normal human connections. Never mind just how isolated she feels as a magic-user in a universe where magic is considered a thing gods and monsters have. Because she's not a stone-cold killer, she must be a "mawkish titmouse." (And this is nowhere NEAR the most I've seen JRPG fans shit on Terra!)

Yeah, I would be more inclined to agree with those people if she wasn't obviously coming off/out of amnesia and not knowing who exactly to trust. I honestly thought it was just kind of incidental that the people who end up helping her were men. Maybe I've forgotten certain things, but I can't recall anyone saying that she shouldn't fight or treat her that differently because she was a woman (well maybe Locke, but he has his own personal reasons for doing his shtick.) I might be a little biased because one of my favorite females characters went through something similar, without amnesia, so IDK. I think I get what they were supposed to be saying, but the difference they seem to draw between JRPG heroine and hero really odd.
