As female protagonists go, Tina/Terra isn't really a good example of "weak"

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The way I would say it isn't that she's "weak," but that she's not the stone-cold badass some fans seem to want her to be. She has emotions, she has low points, and there's more to her than "kill all the things!" This is actually something you see with male characters, too, it's just that male characters are more likely to actually BE stone-cold badasses. (Or as a villain in Manly Guys Doing Manly Things once summed it up: "Why are you crying, you pansy? You're supposed to be a brooding anti-hero like Batman! Why aren't you Batman?")

To add to that

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
She grows during the game, but I'd say her personality, at least during the beginning, is pretty "weak". Not in a she's-a-bad-character way, just she's not really strong except in that she can do magic.

I hate how narrow mainstream definitions of strength are. There is more to strength than being good at fighting. There are all sorts of strengths and weaknesses that people can have and I wish that some of them were valued more than they are now.

Same.

Personally, women acting like men in media bore the crap out of me. I want some femme in this bitch.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it either, OP. As long as they're written as humans and not some sort of yuma bait, fanservice or a mixture of both.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true enough I suppose, but I feel like all the main characters in Final Fantasy VI were all fantastically written men and women, and are probably some of the most relate-able characters in a JRPG I've played.

Not entirely sure where I wanted to go with that, guess I wanted to just point out that I would definetly not call Terra/Tina weak or useless or dependent on men; well maybe at towards the beginning, but I feel she quickly overcame this. IDK, I guess I'm just wondering what the purpose of using Terra/Tina as the image for this secret, just feels like a disconnect. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it, it is a nice picture of her.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll take one of the less extreme examples, from "The Rise and Fall of Final Fantasy" (which seems to have become where every conversation about FF begins, in the same sense that every conversation about food critics begins with that monologue from Ratatouille):

"As the cast member closest to the axis of the main story, and as the first to receive a formal introduction, Terra is a strong candiate for the designation of Final Fantasy VI's main protagonist -- which would make her the first instance of a female Final Fantasy hero. Unfortunately, Terra more or less remains a JRPG heroine, which is a much different creature than a JRPG hero. It's hard to belive that a magic-flinging, flying, human/phantom beast hybid with the power to change the course of a war could act like such a mawkish little titmouse out of battle, requiring the emotional support of (much less powerful) men in order to function, and constantly soliloquizing about how she is too different to ever find true love. (Not that female characters shouldn't ever be allowed to express emotion or vulnerability, but this particular female character is a demihuman sorceress with extensive military training; not a damn schoolgirl.)"

Never mind that she's snapping out of brainwashing that apparently lasted most of her life. Never mind that this is the first time since infancy that she's had the opportunity to form normal human connections. Never mind just how isolated she feels as a magic-user in a universe where magic is considered a thing gods and monsters have. Because she's not a stone-cold killer, she must be a "mawkish titmouse." (And this is nowhere NEAR the most I've seen JRPG fans shit on Terra!)

Most of the 'strong male jrpg characters' wouldn't survive without those 'weak female jrpg characters'. Don't fuck with the white mage yo.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's only true maybe half the time. The other half of the time, the guys ARE the white mage - or at least, they can be with little fuss.

Every time I see people say things like that, I have to wonder what games they've been playing. I've never had trouble finding JRPGs with interesting and dynamic female characters.

Terra is amazing.

Now that I think about it, I don't remember any "weak" female characters in the FF series.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think the one who's normally named as the weakest is Rosa in FFIV (who's admittedly pretty bland, but it's FFIV--no one got that much character development.)

Celes from the same game is one of my favorite characters ever. Though I tend not to recruit Locke in the WoR portion -- it changes her story slightly and I kind of prefer it that way.

Me too. I find it a lot easier to relate to a female character when she shows vulnerability,

I have no idea what the picture is from

IA I love the beads.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly think the Final Fantasy series has traditionally had a ton of awesome, strong female characters. Not all of them are physically strong, but especially in the older games, they were strong, multidimensional characters.

I didn't necessarily like all the female character (or male characters for that matter), but still. I don't think any of them were, personality/ability-wise, a slap in the face to feminism.

However, no words can describe my horror and hatred for what Square Enix has done with Lightning. In the newest game, apparently they spent the time to make her boobs bigger (from size C to size D) and work out jiggle dynamics, IN ADDITION to playing dress up in a number of super revealing, super out of character costumes. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I was so stunned and disappointed by that too. It was the baldest reminder that GAMER CULTURE and the companies that appeal to it are still appallingly sexist.
