I hate how narrow mainstream definitions of strength are. There is more to strength than being good at fighting. There are all sorts of strengths and weaknesses that people can have and I wish that some of them were valued more than they are now.

I see what you're saying, but I think it's okay to have butchy ladies out there too. I personally tend to identify more with them (Michelle Rodriguez is basically my hero), but there should definitely be a balance.

I like it when it seems genuine, or makes sense. I mean, I am totally still in love with Mary-Kate Olsen's character in It Takes Two! Michelle can tooootally do that butchy character as well, but I hate when characters are written just to get people to think they're "strong" and awesome because they act like men.

I'm hesitant to call it women acting like men because that's a whole complicated mess of "well that's the way it's perceived by society so I might as well use those terms but then there are people who think some traits are inherent to a gender binary and I don't want to associate myself with them" but I agree that there needs to be more variety and I put a lot of the blame for that lack of variety on a disdain for things that are considered feminine.

I don't like the phrase "women acting like men" because it implies that women being physically badass aren't acting like women. Which they are. Because they're women.

*rereads your comment* actually, I think you and I are saying the same thing. Also I 100% agree with your second part. I love me some physically badass characters (not just female ones), but I love variety too and the regocnition that multi-dimensional human beings with physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, etc. strengths and weaknesses and infinite variety, just like men.

I just want variety. I want female characters that seem human. I want many female characters. The problem is when you have just one or two in a show/movie/book/game and then they have to represent all women. I like to have women who are different. Femme women are awesome, but so are other sorts of women.

I actually very strongly agree with you.

I wasn't digging into that though, and I know I was unclear in my original statement. In my opinion, it can, a lot of the times, seem as though writers are trying to strip away any sort of stereotypical female traits just to have a "guy's girl" who men can relate to just to have them drool over and fantasize about them even more. I know that, even if they are written with that in mind, it is still up to me to view it differently. But the point I'm trying to make is that it bothers me when it encourages the airheads to be sexist and small minded about how a woman is supposed to act.

This is... well. Part of why I tend to have more female characters than male*. It is easier to have a wide variety than to just have a couple characters speaking for All Women Ever.

*The other part being I tend to do it naturally, and for a long time was like, "No, no, can't do that, have to have men in here..." and then stopped to think, "Why?" and realized that the co-protagonist/love interest in the book I have been revising for ages now... mostly because I've had a lot of trouble actually writing... actually should have been female from the get-go. So now my slightly effeminate male character is actually a butch lesbian and the cast is now full of queer characters, predominantly queer women!)

Sure. I'm mostly on LJ. I'm actually only here for this com. I haven't been super active lately on account of real life stuff, but I hope to post more after this week.

I'll friend you over on LJ, then :) I don't have a preference; I use both, I just don't have a paid account on LJ after their fuckery with their new site set-up and staff members being ableist towards users complaining of migraines from the new style (which affected me; fortunately, I was able to find a Stylish script that reverts it to the old settings, so I can actually use LJ). I miss my icons, but I haven't wanted to give them money since.

That is completely understandable. I somehow missed the ablism. I may rethink renewing my paid account even though I'm seriously icon addicted. Because that's really not okay. I'd totally move over here if everything I follow was here, but the fandoms haven't moved as of yet.

Yeah, that's why I am still on LJ at all. I have too many friends and communities who have not moved over. Or some of them have accounts here, and cross-post, but people only ever respond on LJ, and I like to talk with the other folks, too.

It has been awhile since that incident but LJ has basically said fuck you to anybody who doesn't like their new style... although, they have yet to release the "new" friends page, which they were saying they were going to do more than a year ago now, so maybe they're learning?

I was very glad when F!S moved, and part of it was due to the site change issue, along with... another site change issue that happened later, that I can't recall, that case basically just said, enough of this shit.

Yes. I mean, I do like that LJ is a haven for Russian dissidents and isn't giving in in spite of the attacks on their site. But that doesn't justify ablism. Maybe when my account expires I'll move my icon collection here and crosspost.

I was afraid that F!S would die down, but I'm glad it didn't mostly. I think it had something to do with the new comment page? That change did go into effect. I actually like some of the new things (like being able to easily add in html into comments), but some of the stuff didn't work well for F!S (like the no subject line).

Maybe they are learning. One can hope.

Sorry to jump in, but may I ask what fandoms you're in at LJ? I miss discussing my fandoms in communities over there, and I want to see if we share fandoms!

Hi!

Uh, a whole lot. I get obsessive about a lot of things. MCU, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, Tolkien stuff, Buffy, How I Met Your Mother, Grey's Anatomy (mostly just Callie/Arizona side of the fandom), Babylon 5, Stargate, Once Upon a Time, and Legend of the Seeker (mostly landcom though).

Also Harry Potter and Supernatural, but the Potter fandom has died out so I mostly read fics and I've only season season 1-6 and like seasons 1-5 of SPN so I'm not really in the fandom too much anymore.

I'd be into the Firefly fandom if I knew where to find it.

That's not what I was saying though. I was speaking more in terms of the writing and how they express that. As annoying as it is, in entertainment and media, there is a such thing as "acting like men". That's more what I was talking through. I just worded myself poorly.
