i'm curious. what do you like about lolita? that's one of the most divisive books i've ever come across, i think.

i feel like i just took a course on the book. in a good way.

i admit i haven't read the whole book, only a few passages. it really is beautifully written. i remember feeling a bit uneasy though. i mean, from a theoretical point of view i understand that fucked up characters are very interesting and that one shouldn't shy away from reading and writing them the way they are, but man, that guy was really fucking creepy.

I love this comment.

I like writing where completely repellent thoughts are expressed in beautiful language and Lolita was what first got me into that when I read it in high school.

this is perfect; thank you for writing it. Lolita isn't for everyone and I wouldn't blame anyone for nopeing out but it is honestly one of the most ethical books I've ever read, and I don't care how much nabokov is making fun of me from beyond the grave for saying that. it's true anyway.

though on the other hand. . . I read this book for the first time when I was twelve. and no, I was not ready for it. not at all :(

hahaha yep. that face is basically correct.

I was really into pretty language, ok, and that opening line is so perf, and Humbert's mean observations were so interesting and I was hooked on the voice a long time before I fully caught onto what was happening. then it was too late. by then the D: was already a part of me.

D: D: D:

I read it again about five years later and reading it again actually dispelled a lot of the uglier residues because I was better able to separate author / narrator / reader and better able to appreciate the book's, as distinct from Humbert's, portrayal of Lo. it's a great, great book. but it is not a great book for twelve year olds.
