Do you have tropes you love/hate, F!S?

Aliens made them do it? Telepathic powers? MPreg? Alpha/Beta/Omega?

Tattoos or timers that reveal your soulmate. I eat that stuff up with a spoon!

Aw yeah, I love that stuff. Have you seen the idea doing the rounds on tumblr, anon? For an AU where everything is black and white until you meet your soulmate, and then when your soulmate dies, the world goes back to black and white.

This is reminding me inexplicably of The Giver.

I've come across it in fic before, but it isn't my favourite idea. Despite my love for this trope, I'm not keen on worlds where a soulmate literally completes you in some way, or you're damaged by not having found them. I get very truculent about the whole thing!

Hate:

Aliens made them do it/sex pollen/anything similar where it isn't portrayed as creepy and where there aren't real psychological effects afterwards. Even if they were in love beforehand and not admitting it, being forced to have sex with each other is going to have an effect.

One true love that means all other relationships were meaningless

Love:

Platonic friendships turning romantic. I love a good slow-burning romance and friendships that turn romantic.

Hurt/comfort where there are realistic explorations. I don't want healing cock. I want real pain and hurt and then real psychological healing with the help of the person they love.

Got any recs for platonic friendship turning romantic? I haven't read many good stories like that, but I would like to. Fandom doesn't matter, although I'm afraid I won't read any SPN.

Hmmm. Not at the moment. They really are hard to come by. I'm really into Steve/Bucky right now, but most of the fics are post-Winter Soldier, not Cap 1-era.

Steve/Tony is a pairing that is full of this trope. Try America isn't Chicken or Semaphore

This sounds pretty much exactly like what I was going to post. Except with more of a focus on H/C-- I absolutely love lots of focus on both sides of it.

But yeah, hate fuck or die scenarios and fics that imply all past relationships were just worthless and dumb-- that's not how humans work, usually...

You and I have similar tastes in the love category. Loooove friendships turning romantic. Even better is enemies to friends to lovers. I don't think I've read many h/c fics that I can think of, but I know it's a thing I like.

Are you me in disguise? Seriously, this sounds like a laundry list of things I both like and dislike!

I love telepathy fic, accidental or otherwise. I blame all the Star Trek tie-ins I read as a teen; the Kirk/Spock mindmelds were always emotional porn.

Huh. Can't think of much else. Anything that puts two very different characters into a hardship situation (apocafic!) where they learn to rely on each other hits my buttons.

Hate:
A/B/O. any kind of creepy AUs where everyone belongs to a BDSM social class. nope nope nope way too reminiscent of real-world discrimination for me.
Mpreg is also just one big NOPE for me.
(also anything where the characters are acting wildly OOC, like normally sweet characters suddenly being all aggressive, or hardened military men calling each other "babe" and "sweetie".)

Love:
interesting crossovers & AUs that you wouldn't think work but then they do
epic longfics that are really well plotted and have good buildup
angry!sex
hurt/comfort. especially with douchebags or comic reliefs having a terrible day, and their friends or loved ones cheering them up
fics that sort of flip the D/S dynamics. where a "dominant" character actually turns out to need the "subservient" character much more than they need them. or where it looks like an unequal relationship on the outside, but they playing field is actually a lot more level.

Love: bodyswap

Hate: mpreg, babyfic

Ooh, body swap. That's another for my list.

Love: time loops and time travel

Hate: slavery/prostitution AUs

Hate: One-and-only soulmate trope. Omegaverse.

Love: Competence porn.

Love: redemption quests. Especially if the quester realizes she won't be forgiven, but keeps going anyway.

Hate: one-sided wars that show off how AWESOME the author thinks his pet faction is compared to the faction they're decimating. Especially if his pet faction is the contemporary American military. (This actually gets worse if the author is a volunteer soldier--old soldiers from the draft era can be a lot more tolerable, but there aren't many of those in fandom these days.)

Oh yes, completely agree with that second one. Anything that treats war as simple and justifiable.

Most loved... I'm not sure I've ever actually admitted this before, but: in pairing fic, reincarnation of destined lovers. At least, in canons where reincarnation makes some sort of sense due to magic/fates/etc. I have a special fondness if at least one of the pair has changed gender at some point between incarnations, and it doesn't matter to them. Similar is when one generation has their love thwarted, and marry other people and have families, and then a generation or two later, their descendants find their way to each other to sort of fulfill that love belatedly.

I'm also not sure I've ever actually read any fic like this, just written it, but I've heard other people refer to it a few times, so I know it must be a trope.

I also have a huge kink for substance abuse/recovery for some reason, whether with pairings or not. (Gee, no one who's ever read my fics would notice. Hahaha.)

Most hated... uh, hmm. Does PWP in general count? :P Other than not caring for porn in general, pretty much the usual stuff. Incest, rape as prelude to (seemingly normal harmless) romance, mpreg for no reason whatsoever and without explanation...

I love substance abuse/recovery too. Probably because I've never seen it up close and personal IRL, to be honest though, which makes me a bit self-conscious about it.

Love:

Telepathy.
Soulbonds.
Friendship-to-love.
Time-travel "For Want Of A Nail" fix-its (Character goes to sleep at age 100+ after a mediocre-to-bad life, to wake up at the start of the great adventure of their youth and decides to do it better).

Hate:
Torture for the sake of unrelenting torture.
Humiliation for the sake of humiliating.
Soulbonds forcing a couple to love each other.
Total denial of previous loves.

You might note soulbonds come up on both. I went back at one point and dug out a fix I loved early in my fanfic-reading life and discovered the soulbond involved forced the couple to fall in love. These days I would rather see soulbonds treated as a bonus way of the bonded couple communicating - they can sense each other's feelings and that helps them understand each other better.
