SN!F. True, very true. Especially over the word "lame". I wish people would do a little less 'sperging out over these things.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
True.

'sperging

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What does that mean?

Re: 'sperging

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Acting autistic, basically. It's a fairly new and ridiculously offensive term.

Essentially throwing a temper tantrum while the person is supposedly "autistic".

I assume you're trying to be funny? I do find it amusing that a lot of the people who are very anti "language policing" are always the ones who like to throw in the offensive language and slurs in their defense.

Is that a font or your actual handwriting. I'm curious.

Seeing as every letter has slight differences, I'm going to go with handwriting.

It can be rather paternalistic at times, yes. And as is the case with so many other -isms, there's a really obnoxious group of people who treat it less like an issue and more like the subject of a competition. They care only insofar as it'll make them look good to other "competitors."

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people need to calm down with language policing especially if it doesn't effect them and is coming from someone who really has the right to choose whether or not they want to use the word.

I know everyone has different opinions on offensive language, but I really think you should try to tell complete strangers how to act, if someone uses an offensive word against you then you have every right to say something, but just randomly trying to police people doesn't really work.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
*but I really think you shouldn't try

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand that this does happen sometimes, but on the same hand you don't speak for all people with mental disabilities. So stop doing that. You are you, you are not we. You sure as hell don't speak for me, and yeah I do get upset at some of the ableist slurs used by people and occasionally speak up about it. And no, it's not just because I feel like complaining for the sake of complaining.

Here's the thing though.

The people who use it most maliciously are the people least likely to care about your opinion on the matter. So folks not wanting to hear shit is reasonable, but they should keep in mind who should be screamed at for catharsis and who should be asked politely.

I don't think OP was claiming to speak for all people with mental disabilities?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a mental disability, and I once saw a person (who also has a disability) be called ableist for describing something as "stupid", and also for using the term idiot.

I have been called both, but really, I think that at this level the policing is going to get rid of any term we can use to describe something... stupid. I mean, how are we supposed to easily describe times our intelligence failed us if we don't have terms like that?

ia. there's actual slurs like "retard", and then there are words like "lame", "derp" and "stupid" that are so disconnected from mental disabilities in most peoples' minds that it just feels like pointless angry policing.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
This. I had 'retard' thrown at me a lot when I was bullied in school, so use of the word is an issue for me, but words like 'lame' and 'stupid'('Derp' reminds me too much of Bevis and Butthead and I hated that show, so I'd likely not use that particular word myself, but I wouldn't necessarily be offended by it)? Yeah, it's taking the PC police a bit too far IMO.

To me it's that when you think of where "retard" came from, you immediately think of a person with a severe mental disability ("mental retardation", not sure how PC that is but it's the medical term afaik), and the word is mocking them by using it as an insult. When you ask where those other words come from, either you can't make a solid connection ("stupid" just means stupid), or it's a term that's literally never used in association with its original meaning (like "lame").

ia in most cases, but OP still sounds like an asshole. the problem isn't being able to take a joke or being a baby or whatever, because that makes it sound like, yeah, x is a word with bad implications towards disabled people, but whatever, lighten up. the thing with "stupid" etc is that there is no consensus among disabled people on whether it has these implications, it's a useful word to discribe attitudes or behaviors, and that strict language policing in sj circles actually prevents mentally/intellectually disabled people from participating. ableism is a real thing but "omg u cant say lame!!!!" misses the point hard.
not sure what the popular idea on "herp derp" is, to me it sounds like imitating someone with an intellectual disability.
