Character Creation

Oh how I hate you, Character Creation. I can spend hours on you and still have a character what makes me weep, and not in a good way.

Long story short F!S, I'm trying to remake my Shepard's face in Mass Effect 2 so I can have a face code and to fix a few issues where he doesn't look like the ethnicity I intended him to be. It is not going well. I'm even using a face model! Ugh.

So guys, commiserate with me. Tell me of your failures with Character Creation. (In anything) Or heck, tell me of your lucky successes. I have one of those. She's a treasure. So common, hit me with it.

Did you know that Guild Wars 2 character creation doesn't include gray eyes?

They have purple, but no gray. asdfghjkl goddammit my character's eyes are gray in my headcanon why the fuck can't i do that it makes no seeenseeeeeee

OH MY GOD WHAT I NEVER NOTICED THIS probably because I've never deliberately tried to make a character with gray eyes, but... Man, we can have characters with blue hair in this darn game but not gray eyes?

I've created characters on the saints row game that I named Minimum Face and Maximum Face because I fucked with the sliders.
The results were magnificent.

My brother let me play FF XIV : a real reborn so I decided to make the most anime character I could think of, so I have an elf-like female character with blue-grayish skin, short pink hair, pointed ears and a beauty spot next to her eye. I guess it could have been more anime if I picked the cat people, but I wanted an anime dark elf :D

Oh, man, the first time I played Mass Effect, I was astounded by how much paler my Shepard was in the character creator than she was in the game. I think it was worse in 2 and 3 than in 1.

I know, right? I make a black Shepard with the darkest skin tone and when she came out I was like, "...wait, did I mess something up?" On top of that I found out that in certain scenes they had only done the lighting for light-skinned characters because when my darker Shepards came through I couldn't see their faces.

In Skyrim I managed to create a character with a really good looking face, only to cover it with a mask at first opportunity. There's a bit where you are forced into normal clothes and get a third person view, and I was so confused because I thought the game was suddenly focusing on this random NPC. I didn't recognise my own character's face.

I could have created the ugliest character ever because that mask is their face.

Haaa, a waste of a face. But hey, at least who can headcanon it as everyone being shocked when your character takes the mask off because they are so pretty.

Saints Row the Third has a weird thing (at least for me) where the face of female characters never comes out in the actual game cut scenes looking how I actually designed them in the character creator...attempting prominent cheekbones results in 'cadaver'...trying to give a bit of a cute overbite causes my characters to look like Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel...and attempting to figure out how to get what I actually intended is basically very expensive trial and error at Image As Designed. (Oddly, my one male character actually came out looking pretty much exactly how I wanted him, the bastard.)

And a particularly annoying issue I have with character generators that give large palates for skin colour (rather than 'here's a selection of realistic skin colours, and maybe a few oddball ones if you want an alien or something')...attempting to make a dark skinned character generally results in 'ashy grey' instead of the colour I was trying for. (I once managed to get a Soul Cal III character who looked like an actual black person, but forgot to note what I'd chosen for her skin-tone before deleting her and haven't managed the feat since.)

I bet you it's the 3/4th turn thing. Do they allow you to turn the head that way? Because they don't in the ME Creators. So you end up not knowing how a slider will affect a certain angle unless you toggle the head back and forth constantly or you wait until there's a 3/4th shot in game.

Aw, damn, maybe there's a place on the internet that can help?

I don't like Character Creation where you can't change skin tone. Also Character Creation where they provide you with ten options and only two actually look decent, like they tossed out a bunch of shit just so they could say players have options when they really don't.

Okay, seriously, I am still in the same character creation page. These cheeks aren't working. Gauntness won't let me fill them up! It gets halfway full in the middle of the slide and then goes back down if I go further.

I actually like character creation (if it's a good creator and there aren't just terrible hairstyles to choose from) but I also spend so much time on them. But the worst thing is spending over an hour on the character, finally being content with the outcome and the clicking on to encounter... THE NAME CHOICE. I always spend at least twice as long on the character's name than on their appearance. And every time I think "For the next game, I'll think of some names before starting the character creator so I won't get stuck on it again" but I never do...

I love character creation, but depending on the game it can be fickle and insanely difficult to get what you want. It's the worst when you want a character to look one way, you look at them in the creation screen and think, "I've done it! You're perfect," then you get into the actual game and they look totally different. Usually the skintone; it's so disappointing.

I feel like I've made some pretty hot characters (see icon), but at the same time...those are my tastes so...idk. I am not unbiased, lol.

...They have mostly the same face with some tweaks to hair (color and style) and eyes. lmao.

It depends on the game. With Fallout or Skyrim I can usually crank out something in 5 minutes.

Demon's/Dark Souls? Half an hour or more.

I gave up on trying to get mshep faces working in Mass Effect 2. Starting with anything but the default always seemed to end up in uncanny valley rigging weirdness.

I always spend ages on the character creator in any game that gives me the option, my fem!shep has the standard features(as I did t want to risk buggering it up) but it took me ages to get a hair/eye colour I liked and the rest of it.

The first ever WoW character I made I spent aaaaages getting everything how I wanted it even though the customisation options are not very extensive at all, these days I'm less picky about hair style/colour but that's because you can change it in-game easily enough. I love how all my WoW characters look though I am having trouble finding a skin tone that I want for a new character I'm thinking of making.

And GW2's character creator is amazing, really customisable for an MMO. I love it though and have managed to get my characters looking great. In GW though there is no way to change hair style/colour at all so once you've chosen your stuck so I spend much longer on it than the WoW character creator these days.

I'm like that right now with Wildstar. I love the Aurin women a lot, but damn do I wish they had the variations in their fur, hair, and skin. The males will get stripes, spots, etc and have rainbowy looking hair, but the women? Solid colors. But they get different kinds of ears and their faces are better.

Draken are teh same way. The women have SO few hair styles. they need more. The Aurin ladies got a few extra in the last beta weekend, but the Draken didn't. D: And I feel half of their skin tones are too...sickly looking.

Mass Effect's character creator made me so angry. I could manage a halfway decent female character, but all my dudes looked like they hit every branch of the ugly tree on the way down. Mostly because there's almost no way to create a pretty-boy ManShep, you're stuck with a gruff square-jawed soldier template whether you like it or not.

I goddamn LOVE the character creation in games. I spend hours on those things, making my character look perfect. I've even borrowed a friend's computer so I can fiddle with the character creator with games I don't have.

Have you seen the character creation engine for Sims 4? It's fucking insane. I want that game JUST TO MAKE PEOPLE.
