New browser

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-05-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Chrome has been running slower and slower for the past couple weeks, to the point where it's much faster and more reliable to browse the Internet on my phone. IE seems to be unaffected, but I hate IE. What browser do you recommend? (It needs to be something that can run ad-blocking software--I'm not buying cars or insurance, and I'm not sure why everyone wants to sell them to me.)

Firefox? I guess?

Oddly enough, I switched to Chrome from Firefox for that exact reason.

Firefox with AdBlock Plus and NoScript.

Gonna say Firefox as well; I've been using Firefox for years and had no problems with it. AdBlock Plus is extremely useful and easy to install on it as well.

Firefox. Chrome is on par with FF for the extensions and plugins, and Adblock plus is available on it (as with everything and phones too).

Also, did you clear out your cache or history?

I just figured out now how to clear the cache and the history. I'll try the checkdisk whatever later, since I'm not sure how long it takes.

Hmm, a lot of people are recommending Firefox so I'd like to warn you the reason I stopped using it was because it's a memory hog juggernaut. Not light AT ALL. Unfortunately I'm using Chrome now so I can't really help you, but I hope someone suggests a browser other than Firefox for you.

This is true. Sometimes Firefox gets my PC fans running harder than a damn video game with only a dozen tabs open. I use it anyway because Chrome is the devil.

Re: New browser

I know at one time I was having trouble with Firefox and memory leakage, and one solution to it was to keep an empty tab open, or reload an empty tab. I basically always have an empty tab open at this point, mostly because it's at the front of my tabs where all the old stale tabs I mean to use some day love and I forget it's there.

No idea if that's still helpful.

I'm willing to try any tricks at this point. Thanks for the tip!

Have you tried doing a cleanup with CCleaner and disabling some extensions? I don't mean adblock or other essential ones, but sometimes they pile up or one of them decides to be slow the whole thing.

Get Firefox.

Re: New browser

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
So...given that the reason people who switched to Chrome from Firefox did so because Chrome was lighter weight, and given that that's also why I switched from Firefox to Chrome...

I think you need to clean your computer.

Defrag and run Chkdsk.

For chkdsk, if you're running Windows 8, I have no idea what to do. Otherwise:

-go to the Start Menu, and, depending on your OS, either select "run" and type "cmd" or type "cmd" in the search field
-Right-click the resulting program and select "run as administrator"
-type cd\
-type chkdsk

Defrag you can get to in a similar manner. If you just type "defrag" into the search bar or in "run" then it will pop up.

If you don't need accessibility features or some of the other more obscure bells & whistles, you could try Pale Moon. It's a streamlined Firefox variant that accepts just about all of Firefox's add-ons, including NoScript and AdBlock Plus.

Firefox is my favorite browser, it has great adblocking, but it's a memory hog (it's the only browser left that still runs in a single process, even IE has at least two). If you want something lean and mean, I recommend variants of Firefox's code, like Pale Moon mentioned above, or Waterfox, which I'm using right now, which is optimized for 64-bit systems. Or you can go completely off the rails and try Opera. Aside from Adblock, it doesn't have anywhere near the number of addons the other browsers do, but that also means you won't be tempted to clutter it up with extensions that make browsers run so slowly. It's very efficient (they're the creators of Opera Mini after all, by far the best browser for non-smartphones).

+1 to Opera. I just switched to it recently and it's so efficient. It's got adblock, but that's pretty much the only add-on I run on it. (Well, that and Tumblr Savior is it really.) I do have a couple compatibility issues but I'm pretty sure that's my old-ass computer and not the browser.

Also it has a lot of pretty themes you can apply to it if that's your style.

I use Opera. Gmail seems to hate it, but gmail seems to hate all of my browsers, tbh.

I use Opera too and have all my mail accounts on html/little version on default to avoid any issues.
It may not be "pretty" but it works well.
