Faking it...

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-05-08 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I have a job interview tomorrow. It's for a part time job to get extra cash while I (hopefully) get more freelance work going. Thing is, I'm not exactly excited. It's more a necessity. And I'm a horrid liar with an expressive face. So, how do you fake being excited in a job interview you're not really excited about? Like, I can say the works but it still feels like bullshit when I hear myself.

Be excited about the money.

That's sort of it, though. Money in itself doesn't really excite me. It's more like a necessity, like putting on sunscreen. Something I reluctantly need more of.

I get what you're saying, but the strange thing is the longer I had to make due with less, the more I learned I care less about money than I thought I did. But I'll probably go in there thinking about paying my car insurance, heh ;)

Last time I was asked the question "why do you want to work here", I just said it seemed like a great working environment and that I like working with people, both of which are true but the job was for a Guide/Hostess thing and I could have faked it and said "Oh I love history, and especially the history of the fortress I will be guiding people in, and also my favourite thing in the world is to make food", but that is a lie, liking to work with people and that the people I will work with are nice is the truth. The real reason I wanted the job, like any other job I've applied to: I need the fucking money!

So you could just try to use some kind of tactic like that? I also once used my experience working in a dry cleaners, to prove that I was good at working independently, while also mentioning that I have had jobs where I worked in a team and enjoyed both.

Any kind of job gives you some kind of experience you might need later in life, so just play of that.

I'm not sure this was the best way to word this? Do you get what I was trying to say?

What I got from that was: focus on what you think are the good parts of the job even if you think they are minor and just go with that.

Not sure if that what you meant, but that's actually useful, I think I can work with that, thanks!

Oh.

Don't fake being really excited. But you want the job, right? It's a necessity, so you NEED it. Act that way. Treat this like a project. You earnestly want this, so keep reminding yourself of that.

I'll try, I just fear that will turn me more to the "looking desperate" side, which is also not great. So I guess I need to find a balance there somewhere.

If you're really worried about it, maybe aim for "calmly professional" rather than "I'M SO EXCITED TO WORK HERE!". Play up competence and skills, rather than how awesome the job is.

I'm going to try, though that's also tricky, as it's retail, which I have zero experience in, so I sort of have to guess which experience from other jobs overlaps enough professionally.

Re: Faking it... going Method!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
The best way to do it is to go full on method. Create a fake persona who loves whatever the fuck it is, just throw yourself into the part for a few hours beforehand (go shopping or whatever) and in the whole time you are shopping just keep saying to yourself "how would [persona] react in this situation?". That way when you come to the interview, you have a full on character you are playing and you can easily fake enough sincerity to get through it. Ideally you'd want to do this a few days in advance and test drive that persona for a couple of hours each day to get it fully rounded. If you don't get the job, then work on creating a few different personae you can rotate through at will. Take a few hours every couple of days to create and practice another you in. Bring those out for the interview. Remember that lying is like any other skill, it needs practice to develop and retain.

don't fake it, it'll show. Just be professional and honest. Don't act bored, of course, but if you try to fake enthusiasm/lie they'll be able to tell unless they've never interviewed anyone before.

Sell your soul, losing your conscience in the process and also earning extra money!

Well I was really excited when I thought this thread was about the show.

Idk. How do you act when you are excited? Get excited about something for real you don't have to tell them it's not them you're excited about.

That's terrible advice but good luck.

Re: Faking it...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-09 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Get emotional about something ELSE than what you're saying to get the right expression on your face. Sure, you're not excited about the job. But what about the potential money you'd be earning? Or the fact that after you get it you no logner have to interview? Or that you'll be going out for magnificent food after you survive the interview? Find something else to be absolutely psyched about, and then use that energy to get you through.
Also, instead of saying things about how excited YOU are about the job, you can say thing about why they should be excited about HIRING you. Present yourself as something THEY need to get enthusiastic about. Sell your resume. Work it.
Good luck.
