Does anyone bitch about their job more than servers?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly curious, just seems like such an odd job to get obsessed with their 'pression.

I don't know, give you a job a lot of people don't respect and make your pay almost entirely dependent on tips and I bet you'd find reasons to gripe.

It's minimum wage work that on average pays substantially more than the labour is worth. You've got no serious risks to yourself, and the hours can be decent.

But they're deafening in their "you don't know how hard we have it".

spoken like someone who's never waited tables

Quick question: what country do you live in?

Re: Does anyone bitch about their job more than servers?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
In a lot of states, it's WELL below minimum wage. I used to make $2.13 an hour waiting tables.

that on average pays substantially more than the labour is worth.

You sound like a shitty tipper.

Who says it's more than the labor is worth? Try running a restaurant without any serving staff for a day or two and see how far you get. Anybody who gives up a chunk of their finite amount of time on this Earth to do an honest and useful job for someone else should be well-compensated for it, no matter what kind of work it is.

Christ, people like you make me angry.

Is this the level our trolling has fallen to? A wait staff troll? Really? This was the best you could do? Did you even try at all?

Well, we *did* have wank over shower appliances and huskies. But yes, that's obvious and weak.

For real. I mean, they didn't even try to re-enact the tipping scene from Reservoir Dogs, how lazy can you get?

There were several periods of time where I had to work as a server for complicated reasons. I have a severe anxiety disorder and would literally have multiple panic attacks per day there, and given the details of how and why I had the job, they wouldn't fire me. I would just get bitched at for a) abandoning my post to take a break and calm down somewhat or b) freaking out in front of customers when I wasn't allowed to take a break to calm down somewhat.

I know most servers don't have the same issues as me, but goddamn do I sympathize with any and all bitching they feel the need to do.

Let's see...

-A job that carries nonexistent, or even negative respect
-A job in which employees must carry heavy trays of hot items from an overheated kitchen to a chilly dining room, back and forth, all shift
-A job in which a busy period may mean not getting a break or other opportunity to eat, while having to serve other people their food with a smile
-A job in which the legally-guaranteed rate of pay is pretty much just enough to cover your taxes, so your take-home pay is almost exclusively determined by the whims of customers who have little or no respect for you, and blame you for mistakes made by the kitchen or for other circumstances over which you have no control
-A job in which, despite only receiving take-home pay for waiting tables, you are still required to do things like bus tables, mop, or help in the kitchen
-A job that frequently has no or negligible vacation or sick time or health insurance, forcing employees to come into work and serve food while contagiously sick if they want to pay their rent

Gee, could wait staff perhaps have reasons to feel unhappy and mistreated, or like their work is difficult and underappreciated?

And I've never even worked in food service myself; I just know enough about it not to make myself sound like an asshole.

Sounds like most every minimum wage job out there, except you're pulling in a better check.

All I'm getting out of your comments is that people with other jobs should be complaining more, not that servers should stop talking about completely valid complaints.

... a check that exists purely at the whim of customers and therefore is not guaranteed.

A job in which, despite only receiving take-home pay for waiting tables, you are still required to do things like bus tables, mop, or help in the kitchen

That's pretty standard for most jobs, though. Even my nice cushy desk jobs would sometimes require me to do things that weren't in the job description.

Retail especially, I can't remember a single job application I filled out where the job description didn't include the line "and other duties as assigned by the manager/supervisor."

A job in which a busy period may mean not getting a break or other opportunity to eat, while having to serve other people their food with a smile

Again, something common to many jobs, just without the serving food to other people part.

That's pretty standard for most jobs, though. Even my nice cushy desk jobs would sometimes require me to do things that weren't in the job description.

Except those other jobs are paying you for doing those things. In most parts of the US, the legal minimum wage for tipped servers is $2.13 an hour, with the expectation that they'll work their way back up to "real" minimum wage in tips. That $2.13 pretty much just covers their payroll tax, so when they're not waiting tables, they're not earning money.

Again, something common to many jobs, just without the serving food to other people part.

That's kind of a big "except," when you're serving and handling hot, delicious-smelling food after not having eaten all day. And those "cushy" jobs you mentioned before are usually a lot better about making sure employees get their legally-mandated breaks.

That's because servers are often treated like shit. But I've heard cashiers complain just about as much. Basically foodservice/retail is going to land you with at least a few nasty customer experiences, maybe more depending on your location.

Anyone who works retail/customer service is entitled to bitch as much as they damn well please. You can tell a lot about someone by how they treat people in the service industry and sadly, most people are pretty shitty.

It's beautfiul in a way.

I did my stint in customer service.

But no, I do not think you have to literally work a job to ever possibly have any kind of opinion or judgement on it.
