Yeah, I know what you mean. It can get quite frustrating when people tag stuff just to... include it or get more views or whatever. Same thing with people tagging a pairing that then turns out to be "Oh, we dated way back -- but now I'm with so-and-so."

That never happened to me but I always relate- I would flip some shit. It's really irritating.
Tags are useful but people need to learn how to use them properly, really.

I'm glad you've been able to avoid that -- it's really damn frustrating. There's this small pairing I love, let's call them Bob and Robin (don't wanna point fingers at anyone). If you order fics on AO3 by kudos or comments for that pairing tag, the highest one is a story where Robin is paired with someone else -- and Bob isn't even in the damn fic (he's just mentioned as being Robin's ex).

That's happened to me quite a bit (pairings tagged that are only mentioned as brief past references) but I don't mind so much, I usually like many pairings.

It does make me not think so much of the author, though. It does seem a bit off to those who do care.

I agree with you but I've come across people who want every single minor pairing to be listed because they hate some pairings so much that they don't even want to come across them in the background. I got told off for questioning that before. Apparently it's not all that rare? idk

Yeah, I think I've seen that sort of attitude before. Personally, I only tag pairings/characters that have a main role -- so if there's a background pairing or a character that's just in one or two scenes, I don't add tags for them. If that pisses some people off that's too bad, but I'd rather do that than disappoint someone who was actually searching for those specific pairings/characters.

Wow, those people are ridiculous.

Some of those people have character squicks, though. I can totally relate - years back I read a Harry/Snape story, only to be surprised with a developing Draco/Hermione/Neville relationship, which resulted in several rather explicit sex scenes. Not something I was prepared for, and not something I wanted to read in my Snarry.

So yeah, I'm all for listing all the pairings that get "screen time" in the fic, and if a past relationship is important, maybe add that tag, too, but mention that it's past. It's not difficult. Steve/Tony, past-Steve/Bucky...then we know what to expect.
