People care about their ships being canon because they, for whatever reason, need outside validation that their opinions and shipping preferences are 'correct.' They and their opinions are srs bsns.

I've always enjoyed the idea of my ship becoming 'canon' because it meant that there was a chance for more time with the characters on screen together doing things, but it's less that I want them 'dating' and more that I just want them doing things.

I think that's mostly it for me, too. Like "Oh, they're canon, which means more screen time of them doing stuff together" as opposed to my non-canon pairings where I have to read between the lines for it.

Same here. Plus it's nice to have on-screen moments if (if it's a series/film) to make into gifs and photosets and such.

I was going to say this. My ships rarely become 'canon' and while I don't mind, it still feels nice watching my ship ' on screen'.

I think it goes deeper than that for some people. I've come across a lot of people who all but live vicariously through their ships. For them, a ship becoming canon would feel very similar to entering a relationship with someone they've long had feelings for.

That's scary. People need to back away from the internet when it comes to that point.

As someone who lives vicariously through fandom a good deal - not through shipping but through things like writing and reading about strong friendships - a lot of fandom is wishful thinking. That's why people connect to characters sometimes. As long as they're not insisting that the RL partners/spouses of their favourite RPS ship are beards and refusing to see all reason, I really don't think it's all that unusual.

EVERYONE wants outside validation for their opinions sometimes, especially if they feel very strongly about them.

It's really annoying how you're constantly trying to make others feel bad for having human needs and feelings, while at the same time denying that you've ever felt anything remotely similar to what you're putting down. For once, could you empathize instead of implying that the people who feel they need validation are somehow inferior?

Touchy! No, EVERYONE doesn't, actually. You might, but that's your issue and your insecurity. Own it, don't project it.

I can honestly say that I have never needed someone else to give me asspats for liking a ship. For that matter, I don't need outside validation for my opinions. If people agree with me that's nice, but if they don't then they don't.

Nor do I want to empathize with someone going "Bawww! Fandom at large doesn't mah ships. Baawwwww! End of the world! Rocks falling, canon characters dying!" People like that exist for my amusement, not my empathy.
