I honestly don't think cats are that great. I mean sure kitten are cute. So are most little fluffy things. But I mostly think cats are assholes and do not feel the need to live with one. And I don't think car video's are that funny.

How's that for unpopular opinion?

That's fair, as long as you keep that a subjective opinion. As a cat owner I hate it when people tell me cats are objectively bad pets, when all the cats I've had have been the sweetest, and incredibly affectionate, and positively affected my emotional well being.

I love it when I see a comment and I imagine the person's icon saying it.

Bucky does not like cats. At all. Steve we're not getting a cat. Steve no. no. Goddamnit why would you get a cat? Cats are evil. Dammit Steve. >:(

Haha, yeah I've buckified my icons.

And I'm sure that somewhere someone wrote a fic about them (not) getting cats.

But seriously, cats are for people who don't mind being around assholes. My boyfriend likes cats. I don't. I feel this says a lot about the relationship.

I dunno, I hate being around assholes. But I hate being around needy, clingy, food-obsessed and sometimes smelly people more, which is how dogs come off to me :D

In all honesty, I just kind of get cats. I won't pretend mine doesn't get hella annoying when she whines for attention, though.

That...describes some dogs, but not all or even most.

If you don't want a clingy/needy dog, for example, avoid golden retrievers and probably labs...but there are plenty of breeds that are pretty independent, and also a lot of variation within breeds (example: we have two greyhounds who are pretty much opposites - one is pretty content to be by herself most of the time while the other whines at annoying times and follows my mom everywhere)

Sure, I know there's variation, but it's clear to me they're just not my animal. I like greyhounds best, in my experience. I phrased my comment the way I did because I currently live with a dog my dad got a few years back (treeing feist/rat terrier) and she's gone from bad to worse in terms of clinginess and food obsession and I'm so frustrated with my parents giving her constant table scraps. Cats just work better with my personality in general, no matter how well behaved the dog.

I adore cats, but I can see how they're not for everyone. They're only for people who love fluffy independence.

Lol, that would be a perfect fanfic idea. I wanna read that now.

I could probably be convinced to write it.

Gonna have to disagree with that. I can't stand assholes and I love cats. Most of the cats I've been around haven't been assholes and have been quite affectionate, especially when I've been sad.

I've never really understand the whole cats are assholes trope tbh.

They're sort of like this awkward roommate to me, that I'm side-eying lest they start destroying furniture or bringing back dead animals.

Yeah, this. Cats can be really affectionate. I still remember one of the cats from my childhood who would always jump into my lap and hug my neck. Loved that little bugger.

Cats aren't assholes. They're just not as dependent and needy towards you as dogs are. I love both, but I find dogs a lot more tiring to take care of. Which is probably why I'm a cat person.

I feel like with cats there's more of a territorial element at play - well, between me and the cat.

This.

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's not unpopular at all. Everyone who doesn't own a cat (outside of wanting to but being unable for some financial or housing reason) has that opinion, I've found.

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
lol yep. Everyone with the "Cats are assholes and I don't like them" opinion, 99% of the time, doesn't have a cat and has never owned a cat, or grandma's cat was mean to them, so therefore. Anyway, has not had a very large sample size.

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I like cats a lot (even though they can be assholes) but I don't think ~99% of cat-based humor is nearly as hilarious as other people seem to.

Yeah, not very original, I know. It's just that there's so many. Everywhere. I prefer fluffy rodents.

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

I have lived with over 10 cats in my lifetime, and only one was an asshole, and that's because he was like 100+ in cat years and had terrible arthritis so was not impressed with all the younglings running around him pissing him off.

All the other cats my family have had have ranged from timid but affectionate, nervous but affectionate, a diva but affectionate. The most 'assholish' they ever seemed were when they just seemed resigned to us being affectionate with them - which, when you consider they could have scratched our eyes out instead of letting us pick them up and scruffle their fur and pat their tummies all the time, is actually a pretty significant sign of familiarity.

There have been several asshole cats in my family, mostly owned by my grandmothers. So that might skew my perception.

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'd guess that you don't actually know that many cats, if you think they are mostly assholes. :P I understand the overrated cat videos thing, but I resent this "cats are aloof jerks who don't care about others" bs.

Cats are complete assholes, but that's okay, because they are very easy to punt across the room* when they bite you.

*Do not punt your cat across the room, most are too fat/lazy to stick the landing.
