Re: School Dress Codes

Dress codes in high school are unfair since a lot of people at that age express themselves through clothing.

My primary school had a dress code, it was a long blouse that we had to wear over our clothes and I can assure you that every day, usually during recess, all the girls unbuttoned theirs to show off their clothes.

There are ~18 non-school hours of the day for young people to express themselves. Is it really so bad to ask that for 6 hours a day they dress appropriately for a school environment?

They're only awake for like ten of those hours, but I still agree.

That's true. Well, they can express themselves with their pyjamas too I suppose =p

^this

But then, I feel like people are so obsessed with self-expression these days that if for five minutes they are asked to not be 100% WHO THEY ARE it's an attack on their very selfhood.

yep. And then everyone wonders why no one is a good team player at work. A big part of life is compromising what you want to do so that you can achieve a result. Suck it up, high schoolers.

Oh god yes.
I went to a school with a uniform and it didn't turn all the students into a group of some kind of mindless clones.

It's true. Whenever I see people whinging about this I want to say. So you wore something you didn't like for a few hours, SO WHAT? Did it infiltrate your brain?

I mean do you think all the people who joined the army do it because they saw the uniforms and were like YES! THIS IS ME! SIGN ME UP!

It depends on your definition of a dress code.
Asking the students to dress modestly and avoid wearing revealing clothing or offensive shirts is perfectly fine, it should be common sense.
Uniforms can be adorable but if they clothes are gendered, it could be a problem for people who might feel uncomfortable wearing one.

That could be easily solved by simply allowing the students to wear whichever uniform they want.

I've never seen a school uniform that didn't look completely fucking dorky.

that doesn't make it "unfair", that makes it irritating. School is not a fashion show. When the bell rings at 4, or whenever, go home and get dressed up.

I probably worded my opinion poorly, anon!

I personally don't think it's unfair and being reserved and a people pleaser, I'd have had no objections about it. But if I try to put myself in the shoes of a teen, I can see why they might feel uncomfortable with the idea since school is where most of their social interactions take place.
