Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

I don't trust people who say they don't like cats. I actually go so far as to judge their character. I mean, people who say they don't like animals in general make me wary, but I cannot understand why someone would like dogs but not cats. Personality is so dependent on the individual animals, but having owned many of both cats and dogs, I always found the cats to be more genuinely social, less annoying, and better "friends" than the dogs.

Not hating on dogs, though I greatly prefer cats. But people who say they don't like cats? Eek.

Preferring dogs over cats is one thing, but if someone expresses vitriol towards cats, it will really unfavorably affect how I view them as a person.

Same here.

DA

Same. And if they generalize cats as being assholes or mean. It all depends on the animal and just because they aren't super clingy doesn't mean they're assholes.

And the funny thing is, there are super clingy cats and super indifferent dogs. Cats may not have a biological imperative to slobber all over you, but my cat cries and whines when I'm out of the house and will stop at nothing, no matter how busy I am, to get pets, cuddles, and play fetch.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Same! All the cats I've had would do anything to get my attention and cuddles. Theyve all been really affectionate.

I used to volunteer at a shelter to play with the cats there. Most selfish act of altruism of my life, lol. Anyway, the poor babies (used loosely - anything from a couple weeks old to a decade) were stuck in cages all day, but when I let them out they just wanted so much attention. Sure, some were scared, wary, and didn't trust me right away - but I don't know. To me, earning a cat's love and trust is just so much more meaningful than most other animals. To get a skittish or shy cat to come to me for games and pets was just the greatest feeling.

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Awe, that was a great thing for you to do! Even if it was totally selfish, lol. Oh my god, those poor babies! I couldn't stand to see them in cages myself so I'd be giving them all the love! All of it!

Agreed. We do t have a shelter in my small town, but I know what you mean. There are couple of strays I take care of and earning their trust enough for them to start coming up and loving on me was the best damn thing in the world. The absolute best. Nothing compares.

My dad dislikes cats. He doesn't hate them, and there have been a few exceptions, but he generally doesn't care for them. It probably doesn't help that he's allergic to them.

This comment bothers me a little for that reason. He's one of the best people I know.

Good people can have bad opinions.

It's weird to say you dislike an entire species of domestic companion animal. That will never not be disturbing to me.

(and there's a different between not liking to be around an animal that you are allergic to, and saying you hate all members of that animal species)

wow are you both serious right now? he has a fucking preference and doesn't care for cats. in GENERAL. I even made this super clear. wtf

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

Whoa. You are super-defensive about this. It's not cats' fault that your dad is allergic to them.

yeah I'm a bit defensive about it, because anon said that people who don't like cats were disturbing

with all due respect anon, wtf? having a general preference with exceptions (and I made that very clear) =/= hating all members of that animal species

besides, do you get this way with people who hate dogs (elsewhere on this thread), hate spiders, hate snakes, hate birds, etc?

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

I'm curious as to what you think "I don't like cats" means.

It's one thing to be neutral, or prefer other animals, or not care to be near them. But actively disliking them? Yes. That's weird. Sorry you're getting so defensive about this, and so mad about your dad's right to dislike an entire animal species.

Yes, in principle I think it is stupid to hate any animal that doesn't actively cause you harm or distress. But especially domesticated companion animals.

Honestly, I'm curious as to what you think it means. Not wanting to be around them is pretty much the definition I'm working with? And this is the second time you've conflated "not liking" with "hating". Why are you doing that?

I'm defensive because the way I first read your comment, or whoever's comment it was if you're not OP, was that you found people who didn't like cats to be disturbing and unworthy of trust - your words, not mine - and that says a lot about someone's character. And he likes some cats (a few individuals), he just generally doesn't care for them. He doesn't hate them. Why do you keep saying different things as if they're all the same?

I am allergic to cats as well but I wouldn't say I dislike them. I just can't be around them for an extended period of time or be a place where they spend a great of time.

Yeah, agreed. Cats (of all sizes, actually, all the way up to Panthera) are my favourite animals in existence and it honestly disappoints me if they say they don't like them.

And anyone who says that, "All cats are emotionless and bastards and mean!" clearly hasn't met our three, including one who will follow me around (not demanding attention or anything - most of the time - just wanting to be near me!), one who'll wait at the bottom of the stairs every morning for me, and one that'll lean so enthusiastically in to head scritchies she's actually fallen off the back of the sofa before.

(Also, I am actually allergic but we have them anyway. I figure I'm allergic to so many other things that having the cats around isn't actually going to make a difference ;) And besides, they're a part of the family! I'm not giving them up just because I'll sneeze a bit and get itchy eyes around them!)
