I can't tell if this is plagiarism. Help?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-05-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I got an LJ e-mail alert saying "I was mentioned"/my entry was linked to, so clicked on it and see the metadata for an old fic of mine. At first I assume it's a rec or something, but I scroll down, I see the entire fic reposted in this journal. The entire post was nothing but my original post, except at the top there's an "Originally posted by [user]nyxelestia at [hyperlinked fic title]". And when I say entire post, I mean including end notes, formatted like my post and everything.

Given that they are not claiming this fic as their own, but rather clearly indicating myself as the author and linking to my original entry with the fic, it's not plagiarism. But at the same time...why repost the entire fic? Especially when you've linked to it?

And there's no comment, no commentary, no helpful tags, nothing. The actual journal, when I looked at it, is mostly just this with a handful of other stories, and that's it, that's all I could see.

They literally just took my post and reposted it in its entirety to their journal, and I am so confused right now. Can someone explain what might be going on? I feel like I should be reporting this, but since they are crediting me, they're not technically in the wrong...?

LJ Post in question, for reference:

They might be saving it for themselves in case you delete. Looks to me like they're an archive for fic they like.

Also, they're not claiming it's theirs so it's not plagiarism. However, if you want them to take it down you can always PM them about it.

Exactly this. I sometimes copy other people's fics to a Word document privately for this reason. A few times, with permission, I've mirrored a fic on my own journal.

A lot of LJ journals get suddenly deleted by their owners. I've lost a lot of fics I loved.

It's unnerving, but if they left a link to your original fic post, and were careful to acknowledge that it was yours, it's kind of flattering.

It wouldn't technically be considered plagiarism but it's generally accepted as very rude behavior in fandom

you could reply to the entry and ask them why they did it, it does seem really weird though

Honestly, that's something a lot of people who started om tumblr seem to have a habit of doing when they end up on lj or dw. It's annoying, and yes - very much against lj/dw culture - but technically not plagiarism since they linked to you.

If it's something that's really making you uncomfortable I'd contact them saying "Hey, while I appreciate you credited me, I'm really not comfortable with this, so could you please take it down or make it a private entry?"
