I reread the Discworld series recently, and I gotta say the early books (apart from Sourcery) hold up probably better than the most recent ones. Feels like the last few have suffered a bit of bloat. Equal Rites and Wyrd Sisters are still the best though.

I didn't really like the first book- Guards! Guards! I think?, and it actually turned me off of reading him for a long time, but I haven't read his newest books either. I liked Thud!, Monstrous Regiment, and The Nightwatch (so much love for Nightwatch), but I don't know where those fall on the scale of age. ^^;

Guards Guards is the 8th, just at the start of his Golden Age. The others are shading later though, towards the start of the last third (if that makes sense). Personally while I love Nightwatch, I put MR and T! as being on the downward slide. Near the top of that slide, but definitely not up to former par. Monstrous Regiment was okay until the end, but it pushed its concept just too far at the end.

Then it wasn't Guards! Guards!, it was his first book, The Colour of Magic, sorry, I know it's dumb to get those confused, but I haven't read either for a long time. ^^;

Are you talking about the fact that everyone in the regiment was a girl? Because yeah, that did make me "eh?" a little bit. Like, I can see it happening on Discworld, since there are long odds that the regiment would end up as all women, just by chance, and the Disc loves it narritivium, but at the same time, it was a little off to me. Not super off- I liked the book, but just a little, you know?

It was something that should have been a side joke in another book rather than a book all on its own.

I respectfully disagree, though I do agree that at times it did break my willing suspension of disbelief.

Those are all pretty much in the last couple years of what's considered his golden age.

Huh. Interesting, I did not know that.

If I have to pick my favourite Discworld books, it comes out Nightwatch, Reaper Man, Small Gods, Interesting Times and Carpe Jugulum. They have this thing about choosing your fate, about standing up for things even when it's scary, about the reasons people fight and the things they fight for, about how small things matter so much even on the hugest of scales. I always come back to those five.

I am so made up to find someone else who likes Carpe Jugulum, I've seen so many people slate it. I love it.

AYRT

I adore Carpe Jugulum. For reasons of a) Mightily Oats, b) Agnes/Perdita, and c) you've been Weatherwaxed. I love the themes in the Witch books about uncovering the source of self inside someone, like Magrat in Lords and Ladies, and CJ is so good for that. I like the echo from Small Gods as well, that faith is what you make it, and that people are as/more important. Granny & Mightily having philosophical discussions are probably one of my favourite parts of the book.

+1 I didn't get around to finishing the book about the tosher.
I also liked the first book about Tiffany which isn't very popular, it seems.
