ASOIAF is not a work in a genre that's compatible with serious analysis of social situations or with endings that are fundamentally driven by ethical-political concerns. Martin presents it that way especially in the earlier sections, but that's not fundamentally what it's about. An ending like the one OP wants is incompatible with the world of Westeros and with the narrative conventions that govern it.

Except who is left who would be a less damaging ruler than her? She may not be perfect, but she's the lesser of the actually possible evils (which doesn't include any of the Starks since any of them including Jon on the throne isn't possible within the politics of that world).

This is also my thought, but I don't have much hope of it actually happening. Honestly I have no idea what GRRM has planned for Daenerys now, but if the past is any indication of the future it's gonna be weird and violent.

But seriously, I agree... I was really glad that GRRM had her stay and also had her face all these really deep-rooted issues that made her initial slave-freeing act practically meaningless. These things don't get fixed overnight (even taking into account the presence of game-changing dragons). However, Dany's return to Westeros has been built up so much at this point so as to be inevitable. GRRM was able to inject a bit of realism, but I don't think that's ultimately where the story he wants to tell will go.

Maybe she can work out a timeshare. How long do you suppose it takes to fly from King's Landing to Meereen on a dragon? Even if she's only in each city half the week she's already doing a better job than Robert Baratheon ever did.

I agree. GRRM won't let it happen because she's his fap fodder and DRAGONSSSSS but I think Daenerys would be a terrible ruler and she just needs to keep her ass in Essos. Plus, it would be a really boring conclusion if the biggest bad (dragons) actually succeeds.

In terms of knowing the game, I think Sansa is the best candidate overall, but she doesn't have a claim and I honestly doubt she wants anything to do with the throne after the time she's had. I think if Stannis ditched the red bitch, he could be a decent king. Sure, no one likes him much, but Westeros needs a no-nonsense ruler who understands the big issues.

I agree about Stannis. He definitely would never be a loved king but hey, I feel like the people liked Robert so there's really no accounting for taste. They could certainly do a heck of a lot worse.
