Seconded. The Daniel that returned was such a different character, he was mean where he'd once been kind, bitter where he'd once been optimistic. In-universe Hammond said he'd been given a place on the team as much for his empathetic worldview as anything else. The Daniel that returned had none of that. Once I'd got used to Jonas, I really liked him. He had the kindness Daniel-the-latter lacked. Having said that, Daniel was getting pretty bitchy throughout the season leading up to his "death" too. Guy was permanently PMSing.

Daniel lost all of his sweetness along the way. It was sad.

Though I loved it when he turned up in Stargate Atlantis for those two episodes, and he and McKay were bitter and cranky together. That was fun.

In general though, completely agree.

I wanted Daniel to come back and for Jonas to stay. Seriously... Jonas got only one guest episode in season 7 and nothing after that. That was bullshit.

I was never a huge SG-1 fan (though I certainly enjoyed it!) so I'm probably not as fond of them as most people (simply because I never finished the series), but agreed. I hear a lot of people don't like Jonas but I thought he was adorable. (And Daniel was one of my favorite things about the show.)

Amen! I mean, Daniel's original job was to translate stuff and do archaeology (and some anthropology), and he kind of ended up being team diplomat too because he was their 'socio-political nerd'...Jonas' primary training was in diplomacy/administration stuff although he could do the rest because he had a big giant brain. They should have kept him on to do their actual relating-to-aliens jobs, he could get stuff done while Jack and Daniel were still arguing over whether they should shoot everyone or take them into their bosoms as blood brothers.

Agreed, especially since the whole situation seemed to arise from MS throwing a hissy fit and wanting to leave (and then throwing another hissy fit...).

Honestly, I was always neutral about Jonas. I didn't hate him like some sections of the Daniel-loving fandom did, but I never got attached to him either. He was just there. And he was nice, and I liked him, but I missed Daniel's snarkiness. And honestly, it put me off a bit that it seemed like the sections of the fandom that loved him seemed to love him mainly because he was not!Daniel. It probably wouldn't have mattered who he was. He wasn't Daniel/Michael Shanks and therefore he was awesome. But then on the other side you had the group that absolutely despised him just because he wasn't Daniel, and that was pretty ugly too. Not one of the better times to be in the fandom. :(
