We, ten year old me's feelings are hurt, bc she LOVED Ami.

There was a rebel deep inside her though... there's a reason she keeps going evil in the musicals and live action version.

Minako is my favorite but I could identify with Ami a bit because of her lonliness, and her desire to do good.

Ami is the goodie two shoes Mary Sue? I'd peg Usagi more for the Mary Sue. Ami tends to come across as a know-it-all who sacrifices her free time and social life for the sake of her grades. She's the stick-in-the-mud.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I'd say Usagi doesn't come close to Mary-Sue. Too many people get annoyed with her and call her on her shit. She's never portrayed as perfect. She's lazy and a bit selfish and awesome.

I'd say...maybe Minako? But even then, I think she resented it.

Anon who replied below you reiterating that in context, being from a Japanese series, "know-it-all who sacrifices her free time and social life for the sake of her grades" is not seen as being too stick-in-the-mud, it's an acceptable, ideal (i.e. Mary Sue) way of being "flawed."

There were a couple BNFs who ran a really infamous hate-shrine to her in the late 90s... so, you weren't alone? Your reasons for not liking her was one of their main beefs too, iirc.

When they made the point that she was the most popular character in the Japanese fandom because she had all the traits that Japanese society idealizes and pushes on youth, and that even her biggest flaws are just those traits taken to the extreme (she's too obsessed with studying!) she never seemed quite so interesting or relateable to me either after that.

Are we talking the anime or the manga? I found her more relatable in the manga, even though she was still the smart, efficient one. It's been a long time since I've read it, but doesn't she have a lot of insecurities over the fact that her parents split up and that she learned to mature early because her mother was always busy with work?

I dunno, I'm just not seeing the Mary Sue vibes here.

I hated her on principle.

That principle being that she was my older sister's favorite and I had to hate things that my sister loved just to be contrary.

For the record, Minako and Rei were my favorite.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
But did you ship them?

I just thought she was kind of boring, tbh.

My favorites were always Usagi and the outers. Particularly Saturn.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Same, I always that she was boring. I didn't really care about any of the inner senshi aside from Makoto. My favorite has always been Haruka.

And tbh, I didn't care much for Hotaru either.

I always "played" Ami in my make-believe SM game with my friends and cousins, since she was the one I most resembled (i.e, short hair).

She was my least favorite too.

Most boring senshi ITT

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Since I only ever saw first season of the English dub while growing up, I thought Venus was the most boring because she was in maybe 1-3 episodes before the finale, because she showed up out of nowhere and was hypercompetent.

I always found Mars the most boring. I guess because I'm a very grouchy person and several of my childhood friends were as well, so she wasn't interesting to me.

Mercury at least had her family-based insecurities in the manga, and Venus and Jupiter both had nice balances of tomboy/girly girl interests.

I loved Ami, but I always felt like she was more of a specific character while the other inner senshi had more variety to their personalities. Her entire character seemed to revolve around her studies and I would have liked to see more from her.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ami was the most popular in Japanese because she was serious and studious, a perfect Japanese model. I'm not sure if that still holds today but it would explain why most American girls didn't take to her. I thought she was super boring too.

In PGSM she's great and is one of my favourite characters. But the anime is eh. Hopefully the reboot will change that.

My faves are Moon (didn't used to be at all haha but that's changed over the years), Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe that's why she got the worst starting power. Fog? Really? Really?

She was definitely my favorite but I'm re-reading the manga and Mars is grown-up me's favorite :P

She was favorite. Nerds unite.

Well being a goodie two shoes smartass made her relateable to me. I may have been a bit of an unintentional teacher's pet when I was little.

I see people still think Mary Sue means "female character I don't like"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Ami because she was the only one I could relate to. Then I got on the internet years later and found out that she's the fandom un-favorite and it really pissed me off.

I felt the same way. I was a big fan of the series and because I related to Mars most I think they were so different and opposite that I didn't really find anything thrilling about Mercury. But, Bubble Spray was the best trick and I copied it the most with my Sailor-obsessed friend back then.
Those were the days.
