Same here, OP! Actually, I hate this trend of turning old tales into something dark and edgy. I even hate Inception-like trailers lol those alone are a turn off for me.

But Angelina is an amazing, lovely queen and I will see this for her and her portrayal of an incredible character!

....Also, OT, but I can't believe I don't have an Angie icon already

It's more like turning them back though. If you look up the pre-Disney and even the pre-Grimm versions, shit was dark, yo.

Thing is, this new movie supposedly tames her story quite a bit as to make it not so dark in edgy. That the cartoon is way more dark. In the cartoon, Maleficent is just evil, condemning Aurora to death on her sixteenth birthday. In the live action movie, she condemns the child not to death but to a coma. Because for some reason, you can't kill kids anymore.

That's not what the movie does though. It's more of a Wicked style take on the original tale.

I actually LOVED Sleeping Beauty. It was my favorite movie as a wee little tyke. That said, this movie looks like a hot mess that took an awesome villain and made it All About A Dude, but I want to see it anyway, for the same reason as you. Angelina is just killing it.

I know she wants revenge on the king for stealing her wings, but is he even close to a main character? All the trailers made it seem like most of the interaction was between Mal and Aurora.

See, I didn't think it was All About a Dude at all. It played as a rape metaphor for me, with the rest of the movie about Maleficent reclaiming her power.

It's not top of my list, but I'm sure I'll get round to it eventually. I agree she looks awesome in it though. I want to get the doll as well, it looks fab.

I liked that movie. The key scenes, except a few, were pretty faithful to teh original, and she was AMAZING as Maleficent.

But...(kinda spoilers)


It's very much and AU and in the end it wasn't so much about the dude than it was about her. And Aurora.

It's certainly not perfect, but it was ten times better than Oz the Great and Powerful. Fuck I hated that movie.

Welp, there goes my secret for next week. I was just about to make one saying this is the only time I've understood why people think Angelina Jolie is gorgeous and not uggo. It's like those crazy cheekbones balance out the monster lips or something.

She is breathtaking in this and I've only seen the trailers. That's reason enough for me to want to see it.

I don't mind that it's an AU, I just like that it looks entertaining and Maleficent's design is flawless. (Seriously, I could stare at her all day.)

I loved the movie on its own merits.

This seems to be a very unpopular opinion at FS, but I thought it was a fantastic movie for many of the reasons that y'all seem to hate it. :(

I saw the movie, and hot shots of Angelina-with-horns are the main interest of it. There's plenty of it, too, and the imagery is gorgeous.

The movie was just one big MEH for me. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't awesome either. Bland, just bland. It's a movie that just couldn't find the right tone (is it a slapstick? a Game of Thrones-ish fantasy?) so it was just a mess by the end. Urgh.

But what really pissed me off was the fact that her name was Maleficent from the start. I always figured (from the original Disney animation) that it was a nickname she acquired because she was evil and did evil things. I never expected it to be her real name. Who the hell names their kid Maleficent and not expect her to turn out evil as a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy?

I loved it. Of course, if you're not into things with a magic/fantasy theme, then I doubt you'll like it. Angelina is really cool in it, and I was glad to see a fantasy movie without the endless CGI battle-scenes. (There's only one, and it's brief, IIRC.)

My thoughts exactly when thinking if I should go to the theater for the movie. It would be all Angelina's big face on the big screen.
But we don't have to feel justified for every movie we watch so, guilt free!
