Curly hair issues

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone else with curly hair trying the curly girl method?

Re: Curly hair issues

What's the curly girl method?

Re: Curly hair issues

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The official CG method involves washing with conditioner instead of shampoo and a whole host of other things. There are whole websites dedicated to curly hair and methods of dealing with it.

If you're looking for info, I suggest these:

naturallycurly.com
britishcurlies.com

The forums on both websites are huge sources of information. It's worth noting that other things such as hair porosity come into play too.

Thank you! I have super curly hair, and for most of my life I've dealt with it by straightening or tying it back because I had no idea how else to manage it. I'm gonna absorb this stuff.

You're very welcome! If you don't mind the advice, I highly recommend:

- reading a lot before you jump in
- keeping a diary if you decide to go for it
- looking into porosity - it can be a very important part of hair care routines
- always keeping in mind that your hair will hate some products such as protein, polyquarternium, etc

:)

It's not any conditioner, though. Regular conditioners would cause a lot of buildup they couldn't wash. And the reason the method says to skip shampoo is because of sulfates and petrolatum - if you can find shampoos that don't have the blacklisted ingredients, you can use those shampoos along with conditioners without blacklisted substances. Basically you have to read labels a lot. It helps, though.

CG method isn't for everyone.

Hmm, I don't understand what this has to do with my post... I was explaining that it's not simply using any conditioner instead of shampoo the way it was sounding like. You have to understand what the method says it's wrong with mainstream shampoos and conditioners for curly hair.

I have wavy hair, not even fully curly, and I've given up on shampoo entirely. I only wash with conditioner. It works really well.

Shampoo dries out my hair and makes it look appallingly frizzy. Not that cute frizzy you see in shampoo ads, either. Just looks unwashed and ugly.

Another good tip is to wrap the just-damp hair before it's fully dry in a towel, or to wear a hat for at least half an hour. Also cuts down on the frizz.

I've found that soft cotton shirts work better than regular towels at reducing frizz!

Yeah I only wash my hair every four or five days or I look like a Helena Bonham Carter version of Shirley Temple. My hair is curly AND fine, which makes it even harder to deal with sometimes.

I sort of do. They make too much fuss for me, but I only use conditioner to wash my hair, put some products in, then leave it to dry. I don't do all the clippy-clippy stuff and don't blow it dry, though. Sometimes I turn on my car heater on the way in to work to speed things along.

I wish I could get away with that! Unfortunately my barnet is very, very high maintenance. :S

i have no idea what a burnet is but google says it is a london borough which does sound very high maintenance.

i do feel thankful my hair, though. it doesn't ask much of me.

Looooooool! Oh dear, sorry. Yes Barnet is a London borough. It's also a slang term for hair do. Got a bit cockney there for a second, my bad.

i think the mistake was on my part, actually. anyway, no need to apologize. i learned something today. and damn, it's a cool looking hairstyle! i wouldn't have the motivation to do it for myself, but i'm sure you look awesome!

Well then, in the spirit of clarity, I should point out that barnet can refer to both the specific hair style 'the barnet' AND to just your hair in general. I meant it in the latter sense. :) I don't have the patience for a barnet!

I don't know if you'll see this, but I thought I'd chip in anyway. 'Barnet' as regards hair is Cockney rhyming slang. 'Barnet Fair' = hair. :o)

Re: Curly hair issues

Used it for a while, tried some stuff, dropped some others, and I now use a sort of modified version. I think it's important to go with what works for your hair, so if something they suggest isn't working for you, feel free to play around with things. But I found it really was a great base for changing the way I approached my hair, so I definitely do recommend it.

I wash with conditioner at least every other day, and wash with water every day. I don't use any product in my hair, so no fuss there. The curly girl method suggests flipping your hair over and scrunching up as you dry/put product in, but I've found that actually creates more frizz for me. Instead, I comb my hair when damp with a wide-toothed comb (that's one curly girl recommendation that's worked beautifully for me), then bun/clip it up and let it air-dry slowly like that - it keeps the frizz in check, as opposed to when I leave it down to air-dry.

I do have a mild, sulfate-free shampoo that I use maybe once in two or three months, if my scalp's feeling gunky (water and friction actually gets rid of that feeling amazingly well, plus conditioner if you want). Mostly I try and stick to natural remedies, and my go-tos are a conditioner+brown sugar scrub for my scalp, warm water+apple cider vinegar if there's any dandruff, and warm water+lemon juice for a general clarifying rinse.

Yeah, I'd say that the Must Follow rules for most curly hair are just:
-Avoid sulphates and silicones in products
-Don't blow dry
-Never brush
-Only comb your hair when it's wet

Everything else is experimenting with what's right for you!
