Well, uh...is the thing you hate that he's black? How is that NOT racist?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Because apparently he is one watermelon and some fried chicken away from being the most redneck stereotype of a black person ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahahaha. Oh no.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
If you hate that he's black, then yeah.

If you just hate that they decided to randomly switch races - maybe not so much.

Is it not kinda racist that DC decided that they couldn't have a successful new superhero that was black, the only way to do it was to give the black guy a white guy's identity. I'm sure they are better ways to boost diversity than that.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Bart Allen is now a hate-filled terrorist. Superboy's been like 3 different people who have all died already. Just switching races is far from reason to clutch your pearls.

It's DC comics. It's all random switching.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Notice that we hate all of those changes too. It's like they took Bart and Wally and decided "Hey, let's make them the polar opposite of everything people love about these characters!". Forget race, that's the least of their problems.

[personal profile] truxillogical 2014-06-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not just Bart and Wally. Happened to poor Jaime too. And Static, from what I heard.

And the JLI. "Hey, this was a hugely popular comic that people still talk about and read today because of its goofy humor and portraying these characters as a bunch of schmucks, but with some heart. ... How 'bout if we just have them hit things for a while?"

[personal profile] truxillogical 2014-06-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait. Wait. Okay, I've heard it was bad, but..."hate-filled terrorist?"

Balls. Ringo is rolling over in his grave.

HOW THE F&#* DO YOU SCREW BART ALLEN UP THAT BADLY, DC?!?!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
they de-aged him and wiped his wife, kids and and entire history from continuity,

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2014-06-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems like it's pretty easy to say "I hate that they de-aged him and wiped his wife, kids, and entire history from continuity but hey, it's pretty cool that they can re-imagine the character as something other than a white guy."

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

except the "something other than a white guy" is "p offensively stereotypical black guy" so... its not really that cool

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2014-06-04 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So the logic here is that OP would like to criticize the racism in the characterization but can't because people will think they are racist for criticizing racism?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
No, the logic is that people are overlooking the racism in the portrayal and instead just latching on to the fact that he's a POC. So, when you start to criticize the portrayal, they say, "you're a racist."

loracarol: (What flash)

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-06-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could look at the new Wally and feel like their making him black in good conscious, but half the time I wonder if it was just a way for them to weasel out of any complaints wrt to his new character, like "oh you don't like the direction we're taking him in? It's because he's black now, isn't it?" instead of actually acknowledging issues.

IDK, I'm a bit bitter when it comes to Wally West. :I

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
DC has been weaseling out of everything since the Nu52 started. I don't hate the new Wally because he's black. I hate him for the same reason I hate the new Starfire, the new Beastboy, new Superboy, and the new Arsenal: They aren't fucking Kory, Roy, Kon or Gar.

As you said, a black Flash would be awesome. But the only thing these names on these characters do is add insult to injury and make me trust DC less each moment. Not that I have a lot left to lose...
loracarol: (What flash)

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-06-06 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I will always love DC's cartoons, especially the DCAU- it's what got me into superheros in the first place- but the rest of it... No thanks, not anymore, and for the reasons you just said.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a black guy whose back story is rife with bad stereotypes.

It's not really all that progressive to make a black character who reads like every white conservative's idea of what black people are (and who needs white guy to save him from his troubled past). It's like making your main character a woman who is wilting, emotional, obsessed with babies, in need of a man to save her, and ladylike in public while being wild in the bedroom and then saying "BUT SHE'S A WOMAN, SO YOU HAVE TO LIKE IT AND IF YOU DON'T THEN YOU'RE SEXIST."

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2014-06-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, this is a very easy criticism to articulate without sounding racist. If this is OP's concern then it seems like they are not very good at articulating their arguments.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not understanding why you're finding it so hard to believe that criticizing a POC or female character would not be met with certain segments of a fandom saying, "you're racist/sexist," even if the charge is without merit. It's fairly common.
likeadeuce: (Default)

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2014-06-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because this thread has made it very clear that it's easy to articulate an anti-racist reason for not liking the portrayal. Which makes me suspect that's not what OP means.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
And I suspect that you're either trolling or one of the people OP is talking about.

I kind of wonder if you're totally unfamiliar with some of the more...extreme...parts of fandom. Because yes, there are people out there who are that knee-jerk and unreasonable.

I think OP points that out with showing the problematic panel in secret. :)

Also they did this so he'd never become Flash again. Which is entirely problematic on its own.
likeadeuce: (Default)

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2014-06-05 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
And again, I fail to see why OP would think that a critique of problematic racial portrayals would be automatically derided as 'racist!' except that this community has constructed a bizarre monolith of 'social justice warriors' as people who are incapable of reading complete sentences. Anyone who spends more than 3 seconds in a so-called SJW-influenced forum would note that criticisms of the way characters of color are portrayed in media is the kind of thing that gets discussed *all the time*. In fact, I guarantee that if OP had made a post that said "I think the way that DC portrays the new Wally is racist" then people would be piling on to call them an oversensitive SJW.

There is some serious mirror universe logic here.

(Also the idea that SJW's are invested in defending *new 52 DC comics*? LOL no.
