yes lets reboot bruce wayne to be asian. he'll be a cambodian child adopted by brad and angelina wayne who are still very much alive and happy. hes a cheery happy guy that is okay because he is surrounded by CONCERNED WHITE PEOPLE. he's still batman, tho, because he likes justice. if u dont like this u racist! unfollow me cishet scum!

Seriously though, it was actually more racist to give the black guy a bad background with relatives that are all dead/gone/in prison because black people can't just be normal and happy and not petty troubled criminals. Nope.

(The thing that I hate most is that they made him emo, though - like COME ON Wally West!Flash was the closest to an actually happy mainstream character that DC had)

And as far as B-listers go, there's always Impulse! I love that kid, I hate what they've done to Bart the last bunch of years.

What comes off as amazingly racist is that they didn't make a black version of Wally West, they made a stereotypical Hollywood "troubled black youth" and then named him Wally West.

And they may not even realise the implications of that.

They have rewritten white youths as more criminal in their reboot, too. Bart Allen and Billy Batson come to mind. I think they just like making everyone "troubled" and a bit lawless. So, if they were going to do that to Wally anyway, I guess having him be black gets them points for diversity?

I wonder if they'd think that because I liked the old Wally, with his middle-class wife from Iowa and two mixed-race kids, that makes me class-prejudiced.

I wish I could look at the new Wally and feel like their making him black in good conscious, but half the time I wonder if it was just a way for them to weasel out of any complaints wrt to his new character, like "oh you don't like the direction we're taking him in? It's because he's black now, isn't it?" instead of actually acknowledging issues.

He's a black guy whose back story is rife with bad stereotypes.

It's not really all that progressive to make a black character who reads like every white conservative's idea of what black people are (and who needs white guy to save him from his troubled past). It's like making your main character a woman who is wilting, emotional, obsessed with babies, in need of a man to save her, and ladylike in public while being wild in the bedroom and then saying "BUT SHE'S A WOMAN, SO YOU HAVE TO LIKE IT AND IF YOU DON'T THEN YOU'RE SEXIST."

No more redheaded Wally? Aw, nuts. I liked redheaded Wally. (But then I just like redheads.) It's weird how DC is getting rid of their redheads but Marvel keeps on adding more. You can't throw a rock in that universe without hitting a redhead. (And that would be painful for them to since they are scientifically more sensitive to pain than the rest of humanity.)

What's preventing from introducing new POC characters as opposed to changing old characters into them?

Can't say I care too much because the whole new DC is fucked anyway, but they couldn't just introduce a new speedster like they introduced a new Spider-Man (Miles Morales), and new Green Lantern (John Stewart), a new Aqualad (Kaldur'ahm and Jackson Hyde), a new Batgirl (Cassandra Cain)? All of whom have proven to be fairly popular to my knowledge? I love seeing more races introduced to the comics universe as much as the next person, but simply race-swapping existing characters just seems kinda lazy and manipulative. Though the fallout from, say, a black Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent would be hysterical.

I think it depends. Having a problem with DC changing his backstory and making him a walking stereotype? Understandable. But a lot of the comments complaining about it were less worried about that and more worried about the color of his hair cause - you know - black people can't possibly have red hair!!11

I'm withholding judgment until I see how they actually write Wally, but man, this just seems like such a typical nuDC move. Pissing off old DC fans, using tokenism instead of trying to properly establish and develop a new minority character, desperately grabbing for publicity, all in one move. It's almost admirable.

I think it's racist, obnoxious, and lazy of DC to just racebend all of the old characters this way. I love the idea of a black Flash but why can't we have a NEW black Flash? Why can't we have new characters of color?

Y'know what? Yes.

And first off, I like Miles Morales. I think Michael B. Jordan seems like he'll be a great Johnny Storm. And when they cast Iris in the Flash series, my first thought (and still my primary thought in regards to the entire series) is: "Oh, please cast Donald Glover as Wally West. I want to see Donald Glover as Wally West SO. BAD."

But no, I'm pissed off with the comics.

Hey, he's black now. So...no father, right? And his uncle is a criminal, sure. Oh, and "Every influence he's had is a bad one. He just needs someone to show him a better path. If nobody steps in to guide him..."

Excuse me while I throw the hell up.

Hey, Mr. Barry Whitebread Allen, can you show this poor inner-city kid some tough love to set him on the right path as his benevolent savior, because apparently, it's still the 80's and this is the only story we can tell about teenagers of color.


Wally West has always been kind of a jerk, but a sweet guy under it. Barry was his mentor and taught him a lot about being a hero, but he didn't need to save Wally. Since Bart is busy being grimdark, no reason we couldn't have gotten a cheerful, goofy, biracial Wally West. I get it, we need a reason for Barry to take over as father figure, but is this really the best one we've got. (Wally's father in canon, IRC, was also a bit of a sleaze, but Wally never liked him much, and that was part of Wally's character--he wanted people to live up to the best he believed of them and got pissed off when they didn't.)


Nevermind how much I just wish Wally had stayed in limbo. Wally is fairly unique among the superhero set in that his primary appeal is that over the course of his run as the Flash, he actually grew and changed as a character. He was always a bit sarcastic, a bit more light-hearted than most, but we actually watched him grow up from a callow youth trying to make time with all the ladies into a loving husband and a mature (but still goofy) hero. Wally actually had a journey.

So bringing him back at all is basically giving us a character who isn't Wally West. You just can't bring back Wally West into the nu52 as things stand. You can, however, create a completely different character and give him the same name.

Which seems to be DC's M.O.

Especially in the Flash universe. We've seen it with the Rogues already, haven't we?

And I...I just don't get it. I don't get why we're supposed to care, why this is supposed to be "bringing character X back." Because it's not. It's just a new character, but with the same name. At least when Marvel did that, it was in the Ultimate universe, and the 616 characters still got to be around.

I like Wally West. I love the Flash. But I haven't been reading Flash since a year into the nu52. And this...this isn't reason to start.

And while I get that it's really cool to have a main-ish* character of color (although if they really wanted to introduce a new/old character to be Barry's speedster sidekick, why not XS?), seeing everyone gushing over it hits me like a punch in the gut because...y'know, I miss Wally. I miss Flash.



*"Main-ish" because y'ever notice how DC made sure to bring back all their silver-age heroes as the straight white dudes they always were, but now that we've got them settled and in the spotlight, we can racelift the less important ones?
