OP

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
In before (rightfully) offended folks jump in on the strong wording.

Because my wording was definitely too strong here. I was having an awful day and needed to blow off some steam. The situation is more like:

I am sick of these fandoms, not only because I have no interest in the content. It's because if overexposure. I see and hear about them all the time, between many of them "hijacking" otherwise interesting posts/forums and all of them being really really bad at proper tagging, which makes blacklisting hard. In addition, the majority if the fans I have encountered have been immature and/or prone to random outbursts of strong emotion (as a very introverted person, over-the-top displays make me uncomfortable and can cause some secondhand embarrassment). And of course, in real life I can't tell everyone I know to shut up about their fandoms, and for the most part the people I know are good at understanding what are mutual interests and what are not. But the fandoms in this secret have been constantly shoved down my throat, often with complete disregard for my stated non-interest.

I made this secret in the hopes of finding people who share my sentiments about at least one of two of the fandoms, so I can feel less like a fun-sucking witch.

Don't worry, I feel the same about Doctor Who, Supernatural and Shirley.

Don't worry, I'm a huge Game Grumps fan but I feel the same way about the fandom 95% of the time.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, this does make more sense.

I see your point, honestly. I mentioned below that I used to have a lot of SPN friends, and yeah, some of them would hijack to the point I was so sick of hearing about SPN. Everything was Sam and Dean, Sam and Dean. I felt the same way about JPop and Lost, though... eventually I just made new friends on LJ who could talk about more than one thing. You know?

But I also think on tumblr it's different because of tagging... on LJ you can even create filters for what you/others see, so that makes it a bit easier.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I get you, OP. It is hard to blacklist it because people suck at tagging their shit. Just, I get you on this post and your secret.

Agreed so fucking hard of getting tired of MCU.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Every time I go to find fic, it's always "Ooh! Cross-over with Sherlock/Hannibal/Supernatural/Homestuck/Hunger Games/Once Upon A Time and there's lots of hawt guy buttsexx0rs!"

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
When I don't care about something, running into it CONSTANTLY drives me up a wall, I totally get it. I used to be neutral on Doctor Who, in that "oh I saw a few episodes, but it didn't really grab me" way, but constantly having to hear about it put it on my tumblr savior blacklist.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never understood the concept of hating something because of overexposure. I'm not into any of the things pictured in your secret and it's never been a big deal. Some of my friends are, so whenever they post about them I just scroll past, but it's not as if other fandoms have any impact on my fandoms. Hannibal and MCU and all of those things being popular don't hurt me in any way, nor does the fact that other people talk about them.

That sort of attitude has always come off as very "I hate that other people are enjoying something" to me.

Why do you hate the fandoms so much, you want to leave all fandom spaces? I'm only sort of in one of those and I still don't get this. Some SPN fans used to annoy me (back when half the fandom friends I had were SPN fans - for some reason this has changed), but it didn't make me hate fandom...

In other words, care to be explaining?

i understand why you'd be annoyed by most of these fandoms, except game grumps. what's wrong with it? i didn't think it was that popular. i've seen like, five posts about it, tops, since joining tumblr. from where i stand the only thing that could potentially be obnoxious about this fandom is tinhatters, and i've never seen any.

I'm not familiar with all of these fandoms, but the ones I am familiar with I can totally understand your feelings. Even the Hobbit fandom - I LOVE Tolkien and all things related, but the Hobbit fandom is overrun with people who are just weird.

I don't even know what Game Grumps is, but other than that...the only one I'm not into is SPN, and I watched SPN for around seven seasons until I just couldn't take it anymore. And I'm behind on ONCE but watch that too. Whoops.

So all I can say is I'm sorry that you don't like these things and can't seem to get away from them. I tag my tumblr posts and that's the only way I know how to help. (Though, er, obviously OP probably isn't following me, but just in general.)

I've basically started unfollowing anyone who posts a lot of Sherlock, Game of Thrones, or Hannibal. So I do get it. Just sets my teeth on edge. (I actually like WATCHING Sherlock, I just don't want it in my fandom spaces.)

The only solution I see is to stop being friends with people who like other things. You'll be friendless, but at least you won't have to deal with their emotions!

Overexposure can be annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
My tolerance is directly proportional to how much I like something. That said, I don't really begrudge anyone the fandom stuff that makes them happy, I just roll my eyes (usually just at the computer screen) and scroll past.

Maybe you should think about taking a break from all things fandom for a while. Sometimes a change in perspective can really help.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao at everyone hating on OP. F!S is a place to vent, and at least they're not yelling at their RL friends

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why everyone's hating on the OP.

They are clearly annoyed by the rude behavior of many fans on tumblr (such as not tagging stuff, insistently reccing shows when people say 'not interested', bashing other people's ships, and other obnoxious behavior.)

Some fans need to get a dose of self-awareness and realize how their behavior comes across to other people outside of their fandom circle. It does not make people want to watch the show or movie or read the book. Enough exposure to this behavior makes people want to avoid it as much as humanly possible.

Yes, even if the show is amazing and wonderful, people will still avoid it if the fans are obnoxious enough. I've had this experience myself with a LOT of shows and books, where the fanbase was a total turn-off, but then I actually enjoyed the works when I got around to viewing or reading them on my own time.

I feel you, OP. One of my fandoms has a juggernaut pairing (that I actually ship) that has started to annoy the hell out of me because it's in every. fucking. post. I'd love to read about those characters on their own occasionally, and not always in the context of that pairing, but that's nearly impossible.

I really don't think it's a case of "waaah other people are enjoying things I don't like". Overexposure can be very annoying, especially if it's done in a shoving it in your face way. I mean, I'm in the SPN fandom and think it's funny how we have a gif for everything, but I can really understand the people who think it's not funny in the least.

A little bit of empathy goes a long way, and that goes for both sides of this.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think there are just some bad seed fandoms. I watch both Doctor Who and OUAT but couldn't get into either fandom. More things drove me away from them than drew me towards them.
