As someone who has had kids: prepare for more than a few days where you're too busy/exhausted to participate in fandom stuff.

are you a guy

and is the father an alien

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, fandom friends tend to come and go, so don't expect people to lament where you might be.

Or you could just tell them.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Or if for some reason you don't actually want anyone to know, you could say you have some upcoming thing/project/task that you don't have a firm start date on (though it will be in the next few weeks) and you will be offline for a while.

Maybe just be vague about it if you don't want them to know? But really...I doubt they'll think you died if you don't show up for a week. They could just assume you're super busy. And, well...you will be, lol.

Yeah, being vague would work. "Hey guys I'll probably be MIA for a while, but don't worry I'll be fine!"

You've still got a month left. You could always tell them between now and then.

I mean, I guess I can kind of understand why you wouldn't tell them. Maybe you want to keep your personal and fandom life separate; maybe you never got around to it and now it seems like it would be awkward. But if you're worried, then why not take the plunge and share the news?

Why won't/can't you tell them, OP?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Based on the background, it's likely OP in a video game fandom. Given how sometimes toxically misogynistic gamer culture can be, I would imagine fear of such a response is the reason why OP's afraid to admit her pregnancy to her fandom friends.

I understand that there are probably issues involving privacy here, but this whole secret makes me think of the famous story on I Love Lucy. When they wrote the episode "Lucy is Enceinte", the staff brought in a priest, and minister and a rabbi to consult on whether anything in the script was offensive. All three of them asked, "What's on earth is offensive about having a baby?"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
DA

To clarify on the above Desi Arnaz brought them in to convince the network that it was okay for Lucy to be pregnant on national television.

Sounds like the start of a joke XD

Here is a sample post that should cover most bases, explain why you didn't tell them before and hopefully soothe any possible hurt feelings over you keeping this from your friends:

"Hey flist/followers, I haven't mentioned this before because I tend to not talk about IRL stuff that much in fandom places* - but I am actually pregnant. Like, 8 months pregnant. So basically, in about a month I will probably go AWOL for a little while, and my postings will probably be sporadic for even longer after that, because I will have a tiny human to look after and feed and bathe and clean the poop off and stuff. Just so you don't freak out or nothing.

*It's not because I don't want you to know about my real life, I'm just private and compartmentalise that sort of stuff. I love you guys, really, and you have helped me keep sane over the course of my pregnancy!"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I had a baby on Mother's Day. I took my ipad to the hospital and was still reading fanfic and checking fandom secrets. I mean, yeah, having a baby is tiring, but you're up all night anyway. My husband had to go home overnight to take care of our 7 year old, so reading while I was trying to breastfeed and eventually when I was bottle feeding helped keep me awake. I still read while I feed him in the middle of the night because I'm worried about falling asleep and dropping him if I don't have something else to keep my mind awake.

Congrats, OP, and good luck.

Aw, I thought this was gonna be an RvB secret. How disappointing...

Congrats, anyhow, and good luck.

A few days? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HA

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
I feel kind of bad, but this is the funniest secret I've seen in a while.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Gotta tell ya, my experience has been that once you start having kids, that's pretty much it for your fannish life. You might want to tell your fandom peeps that you're outta there, gone. Because you will be.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, thats not true. I've still got a fannish life, just don't spend as much time online as before, and only during naps and after bedtime. Still go to conventions thanks to grandparents as well.

But yeah, OP is going to have to reset their expectations a bit for what its like having a newborn, they'll be out for much longer, especially if they're gaming. Good luck OP!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The vast number of parents with children who come by my artist table at various fan cons would seem to be outside your experience.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. One of my best online/fandom friends is a mom to two little ones; she still remains very active on Tumblr making GIFs and writing fic.
I'm also a mom (with only one kid though) and still have time to participate in fandom. I wasn't doing much of that during the newborn phase, but things balance out eventually.

Congratulations to the OP; hope you have a safe delivery and a happy, healthy baby!

Bless you, darling. It's obviously your first baby. I wish you the very best!! And if you do get a chance to get back into fandom in some way quite quickly, WELL BLOODY DONE. Who knows, you might even need it. Good luck, and you might as well tell them! Baby Anon could be a superstar.
