Have you met all of them?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
No, but I'm fairly certain a large majority of them outside of certain parts in Europe didn't become a prostitute because they thought it'd be fun.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
what's the deal with "certain parts of europe"? *chinhands*

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Switzerland or whatever treats prostitution like a legitimate job and the workers seem to get taken care of. Contrast that with places like Canada, where 50 prostitutes got chopped up and murdered by the same guy and no one did anything about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Fairly certain"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Are you seriously arguing that the majority of women WANT to join a dangerous business like prostitution where they run the risk of getting STD's, beaten, raped, treated like a piece of meat, and murdered every night? Seriously??

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
if she meets a man on the street and offers him money for sex, he isn't raping her

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
*sex for money

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
If she has no other way of getting food and shelter, then he is. She is having to trade sex for essentials.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
You don't know what rape is do you

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
It is forcing a person to have sex when they don't want to.

There are many ways of accomplishing this, the traditional way of climbing in her bedroom window at 2am with a roll of duct tape is just one of those ways. Removing all other means of support except having to have sex for money is just a more subtle, though no less traumatizing, way of doing it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
And how is the john removing this support?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Then that's a business transaction

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Commercialized rape.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Rape where the victim gives consent and is paid

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
The duress factor sort of muddles the consent though.

If she has no other recourse, that is a failure of the system, but not rape. She is plying a trade in exchange for money. Both parties consented to it. Shitty situation? Yes. Rape? No.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
That wasn't what I was arguing. Prostitution isn't rape, but it's damn well not an enjoyable experience women partake in for the hell of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
You know, you can read the views of ACTUAL sex workers on these issues. They're real people with opinions, and feelings, capable of making decisions and expressing ideas.

But I honestly don't think you believe that to be the case.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
If prostitution is not that dangerous and is actually empowering, why aren't you and every woman on earth doing it?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I'm not a woman. And honestly, if that's how sad your defenses have gotten, maybe you need to just concede that you don't know anything about what you're talking about. Just walk away, find something you understand, talk about that. You'll be happier and won't embarrass yourself as much.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
I have no horse in this race and I'm not the anon that claimed prostitution=rape, I'm just saying people itt seem quite eager to paint prostitution as though it's not a difficult experience for a lot of people. Of course there are variables to any situation and there are those in prostitution who even enjoy their work, but how often I hear of sex workers being abused or killed (as an anon pointed out, in British Columbia, Robert Pickton killed an estimated 60 prostitutes on his own in the span of the late 90's to mid 2000's) kind of slants things a bit. To say prostitution is an evil, wicked thing that automatically equates to rape is myopic and untrue, but to go to the opposite direction and say "oh most women in prostitution actually like it and aren't involved in it due to any outside pressure to find a source of income oh and also it's a safe reputable job" is also absurd. Especially since a lot of sex workers were forced into that life when they were children.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough; I appreciate that you're not one of the total nutjobs in this thread. However, a lot of the problems you describe feed on the very attitudes you're evincing: if sex workers were seen as people doing a job for money, people with the same legal status and protections as anyone else, would they be in danger as much?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I'm all in favor of legalizing prostitution and making it a safe, legitimate occupation. The idea that prostitutes are subhuman or considered of less value absolutely baffles and disgusts me. However, whenever someone tries to make this happen in my country, both sides make extremely conflicting points. Most notably that legalizing it would make it easier for sick fucks to force children into sex trafficking, or something to that effect. I'm not sure if there's clout to that idea, but I do know our current approach with prostitution simply isn't working and is resulting in a lot of people getting hurt.

this is a really silly comment. Every woman ever is not going to do everything that every other woman finds empowering.

There are prostitutes who are prostitutes because they want to be. It's a minority, but that demographic does exist.
