I was told there would be a job...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So my work placement ended this week, I thought it was great and I was looking forward the summer job I was promised when I begun.
Well.
No summer job for me. They are hiring, though, they even need even more people filling in this summer than the previous years, but they won't hire me.
It's not you it's us, they tell me: because I'm autistic. They agree that with proper training I would be at least as efficient and probably even more than anyone else for the job, but they won't spent the time and energy to train me.
I'll have to find another place and this thought fills me with crippling apprehension, and if someone else wanted to hire me they will ask why I didn't get the job at my previous place and once I answer that oh, I wans't competent enough, then noboby will hire me...

Here's what you say: I was separated from the company. It just wasn't a good fit.

This is good advice. Or you can say, "It was a temporary job."

Unfortunately that's a common problem. However, isn't it illegal in many places for them to say they won't hire you because you have autism? If they had reasons to believe you're not qualified, sure, but just because they know you have autism? That's discrimination.

DA

Problem is that it's hard to prove discrimination in court. The op may have hard evidence (something written down, or similar) that proves it. But without that? It's a very though thing to prove.

nayrt, but from my reading of the above, the key point is "with proper training I would be at least as efficient". Company can argue that OP requires additional training and is therefore not the best candidate for the job. Or, at least, not job-ready from day 1.

Not the same as saying they weren't hiring because of autism. Of course, that's just my take from solely reading OP's comment. The company may have said other things that change that.

This. Most jobs prefer people with prior experience for a reason - so they don't have to spend time and money training someone who for all they know might quit in three months.

If OP requires extra training that the other people the company hired didn't, then it really just isn't in their best interest to hire OP.

Which is why job-searching sucks. Everywhere wants prior experience, or specific qualifications which training providers won't give unless you have a job offer that needs them, which you can't get without the training, and so on in a vicious circle.

Or they need you to have a driving licence, which also isn't happening for me.

Just don't sign anything when they let you go. It's their sneaky way of not having to pay severance, and later unemployment

This!

I'm sorry that happened to you, OP :(

Make sure you read over your contract very carefully and that they're not screwing you over in some way.

As a previous anon said, you can say your previous work placement wasn't a good fit for you.

In terms of getting employment generally, have you explored employment agencies, specifically agencies that specialise in helping people with disabilities get jobs? Also, your local autism support group might have ideas or resources to help you look for jobs and keep them - they might even be able to help you this situation.

Good luck!

Wow, I'd be pissed. Why did they offer you a job if they weren't going to follow through? >:( and I hate job searching.

Other people have given good advice already...I hope you find something soon.

If they told you flat out it's because you're autistic, you might have a case for a lawsuit under the people with disablities act. Because, I'm pretty sure they can't flat out refuse to hire you because of it.

That's not actually how the ADA works, to my understanding. The ADA means that a company cannot refuse to hire someone who is otherwise qualified and able to do a particular job just because they are disabled, the key phrase here being "otherwise qualified and able." If the OP needs extra training that other people don't to be able to do the job, I'm not so sure the ADA applies in that case.
