What was your first fandom?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And how old were you when you started?

You can define this in multiple ways if you like -- e.g., first fiction you were personally a huge fan of, first fiction you loved even if you only became involved in the fandom later on, first online (or zine, if you're old enough) fandom...

I used to imagine myself as a part of Dumbos Flying Circus (totally dating myself here...if anyone else remembers this show I will be amazed). But the first thing I really think of as fandom was my involvement in X-Men - that's when I discovered fanfiction on the internet and fansites and actually published some of my own fic online.

First online fandom: I can't remember if it was M*A*S*H, Star Trek TOS, or Harry Potter. I think I got into all three near-simultaneously (when I was fourteen). For M*A*S*H, I was on ff.net (seriously, M*A*S*H has some of the best fic I've ever read and a lot of it is on ff.net) and bestcareanywhere.net, and I remember the first Star Trek TOS fanfic I ever read was this page: http://www.scotpress.co.uk/story_archive/index_by_author_sheila.html

First fiction-I-loved-that-I-later-got-into-fandom-for: Harry Potter (I first read it when I was nine, but never went online for it until I was fourteen). Never touched ff.net, started on LJ and rec sites, then got into Fiction Alley and The Sugar Quill and some other places.

First fiction I was personally a huge fan of: An American Tail and Fievel Goes West (when I was five) <3

I think it was Digimon. I was ten. I desperately wanted to go to the digiworld and get a crest and hold Matt's hand.

Gundam Wing when I was nineteen or so. I got into it long after the fandom's peak and I'm not sure rather that was unfortunate or fortunate tbh. A case could be made for both.

Sailor Moon and I used to follow the webrings of the Sailor Senshi and randoms fanfiction sites. I was about 10, I think.

Harry Potter when I was fifteen. I went to the AOL HP messageboards. (The one for adults, which the other adults didn't like, but the one for kids had ten year olds saying how all the Slytherins were stinky poop heads, so... yeah...)

My first "active" fandom (in which I interacted with other fans and read fanfiction) was Starsky & Hutch, way back in the early '80s, a few years after I had finished watching the show first-run. I was...eighteen or nineteen, can't recall the exact year, but I remember I was in college (would have never in a million years dared to get zines if I had been living at home.) However, the first fiction I loved that I later got into the fandom for was Star Trek TOS.

Damn I'm old.

Dragonball Z.

Dragonball Z. I was 8 years old (16 years ago). It started with looking at fanarts, then reading fics and then I started to write my own fics.

Um...probably Ruroni Kenshin, though if you just mean shipped/made stories about them it'd totally be my stuffed animals.

The first online fandom that I participated in and wrote fic for? Harry Potter. The first thing I completely obsessed over? Harder to call, but there were a bunch of cartoons that I was completely crazy about as a kid and teenager: Johnny Quest, Transformers: Armada, Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, Cardcaptor Sakura, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the DCAU, Dragonball Z, Pirates of Dark Water. I used to pretend to be characters from Visionaries, Pirates and Cardcaptors in particular.

Some of those I still wander back into the fandoms to, particularly TMNT, Transformers and the DCAU. Donatello, Starscream, Ratchet and the Martian Manhunter will always be some of my go-to happy-making characters.

While I was doing offline stuff by myself for years (playing Star Wars in my friend's backyard, imagining stories for my fandoms) but my first interaction with online fandom was with Sailor Moon; I wrote terrible Sailor Moon poetry/fic when I was about 11.

My first fandom in terms of being a really active fan was either Star Wars or Harry Potter. Star Wars came first chronologically, but I really got into Harry Potter. I was 5 (almost 6) when I first saw the original Star Wars trilogy because my parents took me to the theatrical rerelease in 1997. So that's probably it, really.

The doctor asked the patient:
- What was your first fandom? And how old were you when you started?
- Ah, - stuttered the patient, - I don't remember.
- Are you a virgin?
- no, I've had a fandom, but...
- Tut, tut. You should keep a track of your fandoms.
The patient sighed.

Some anime for me. TRIGUN, I think.

By fandom I'm defining as caring to read discussions online and reading fanfic.

It was Twilight.

I suppose if you want to talk about first things I took an unusually strong interest in, it would have to be Star Wars (original trilogy and 90s EU books, mostly Thrawn and Correllian trilogies) and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman when I was 12.

As for the first thing I did fanfic and followed message boards for: 7th Heaven. I hit that interest around 16/17 in Television Without Pity's heyday, and it was a combination of outright mocking everything that was wrong with it and looking for the kernels that *could* have been the basis of some really good stories if it had been a different, much better show.

First work I was a fan of - umm that's difficult, actually. It may or may not have been written by a super obscure Eastern European guy no one cares about.

First thing I loved and whose fandom I later got in - the SH canon.

First online fandom - Murder Rooms. One True Fandom forever and ever :D
