The Americans has many long scenes of native Russian actors speaking the language. In fact they usually have a plot of their own each episode. The writers on the show were at first apprehensive because they didn't think people would sit through too much subtitles, but the response from the fans was so positive that they amped it up a lot in the second season.

I cared about JK Simmons' character (too lazy to look up his name) and Beecher's relationship just as much, if not more. Man, Oz was a good show.

have you tried watching, y'know, foreign shows? the characters are pretty much guaranteed to speak in their native language.

That doesn't sound like that's what the OP meant, though. A show made in, say, Spain would obviously have most of the characters speaking Spanish because that's likely what their target audience speaks. But the shows in the secret are made for audiences who, presumably speak on English, yet the writers put in the extra effort to be more authentic.

The Korean couple in Lost spoke almost exclusively in Korean with subtitles for the first four seasons or so. It was especially neat because the actor playing the husband is American and didn't know Korean, so the actress playing his wife taught him.

And it was only subtitled when either nobody else was around or they were the viewpoint characters. If the character who was currently "telling" the story couldn't understand them, neither could we. I loved that.

I also love how that actress was actually a big movie star in Korea before she made the flip to doing American stuff. I dunno why, it just really added something for me, to the whole "learned English" thing.

Just off the top of my head for other American shows that have this: Heroes and Breaking Bad. I'm sure there are plenty more shows with characters speaking other native languages. It used to not be done because I'm sure the producers assumed "viewers won't like it and won't read subtitles!" But more and more shows have been doing it and I think it's generally considered acceptable practice now.

Except for the fact that Ando in Heroes was Korean and spoke Japanese. Masi grew up in the US but spoke Japanese. It's actually hysterical to hear his native English voice and his Japanese voice (not sure if it's acting or not) because they are sooooooo different.

I tried OINB because people kept telling me it's like "Oz in female" (and I love Oz), but it's just so blaaaaaand compared to Oz. I guess it's not fair to compare any show to one of the best TV shows ever made, but still.

As for your secret, I totally see your point. It's so annoying when people speak the "wrong" language on shows or in movies just because the producers think the audience can't possibly be expected to read subtitles. Especially if the characters end up speaking English with overblown accents to show that they're still "foreign".

That was my problem with the Russians in Hunt for Red October. We're on their ship, seeing their POV and they're speaking English with Russian accents O.o Except for Sean Connery, of course.

Stargate Atlantis - Zelenka, every once in a while
Almost every spy drama, probably, (yes, sometimes, the actor isn't actually from the region of whatever language, but there are a fair few who are).

I loved the scene with the Mexican girls switching back and forth between Spanish and English in midsentence, because I have known so many people who do that.

It really puts me off that they didn't find real russian actors to play russian characters. They all have TERRIBLE english accent. In fact, Healy has way better accent when speaking russian than his "russian" wife!

Grimm has a Frenchman speaking French, a German speaking German, and a Russian-descent Canadian speaking French and Russian! And German. And Latin. The guy speaks freaking everything.

(Actually for a fairly standard urban fantasy procedural Grimm has a shitload of international presence/multilingual dialogue.)
