What are your thoughts on yaoi?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Summarize your opinion of and/or your approach to slash in five sentences or less!

If if varies a lot depending on the fandom, generalize as best you can.

Yaoi and slash are not the same thing. Yaoi is a subgenre of slash and is that whole rapey strong-seme-"woos"-reluctant-uke thing with sparkles and creepiness. Slash on the whole is good though, if it's kept as in character as possible and the female-bashing is kept well-away from it.

I want two hot guys fucking. I don't want one hot guy raping another hot guy who's weeping. The latter is what I keep finding, so I've largely been avoiding stuff about hot guys fucking, which really sucks.

(This is not a rec request--when I really want to find two hot guys together, I just browse TV Tropes until I find something that isn't too rapey.)

Slash and yaoi are not the same thing. There is overlap, but it's not really an interchangeable term in most cases.

Yaoi: I love good yaoi manga, dislike the crappy ones.

(lol @ the subject line)

I love slash, because to me, it is a totally unique, creative, female-gaze-y genre with a huge variety of possibilities and narrative applications, and gives me a special thrill that, when I crave it, nothing other than slash can ever satisfy.

I tend to prefer gen, though, since platonic friendship and other non-sexual interpretations of relationships also give me an even-more-special thrill (usually because in most of my fandoms, gen is rarer and more holistic towards the entirety of the fictional work, and therefore feels fresher).

I really dislike "they obviously have to be gay!" approaches to slash, even for ships I'm 100% behind, not only because I like gen a lot, but also because in my opinion, the best thing about slash is the fact that it takes advantage of the elasticity of relationships, their capacity to have many different facets and be believably molded into many different forms, so "obviously gay" ruins the whole reason I slash couples in the first place.

When it comes to couples I like to slash, I view the slash as an added dimension to their relationship, not an "explanation" of why their relationship is the way it is in canon.

ETA: oh wait, I get one more sentence, so my fifth thing is that I love how good slash manages to be about well-developed non-stereotypical gay/bisexual characters who are in love with each other and who aren't totally defined by their sexuality, and I kind of wish that more canon works that featured same-sex couples were characterized more like really good slash fics.

Though the terms aren't really interchangeable, I think a lot of fans use them interchangeably, especially if they are in an anime/manga/Japanese video game genre - and that's completely reasonable, in most cases. I'd say yaoi is, more or less, an aesthetic style of gay porn generally directed toward women, whereas slash just involves any two guys. Slash, if I understand correctly, does involve two already existing fictional male characters, as opposed to original characters (though among fandom speak that's probably losing relevancy, too) whereas yaoi can be "original".

Hey, that was only three sentences, so I have... now, one left!

I LIKE GAY!

Yaoi is different from slash. It applies to some anime/manga and has the seme/uke, rapey, gender stereotype thing happening and I won't go anywhere near it. I get irrationally annoyed when that stuff shows up in Western fandoms and is called slash.

Re: What are your thoughts on yaoi?

As a straight female, I appreciate it sexually and read fic for it, but do not find the fandom's popular slash ships emotionally compelling. As such, I do not write slash except as an ancillary pairing to my preferred ships, which are generally het. Unfortunately this leads to some resentment as my preferred pairings are disregarded for the competing slash ships.

I don't porn, but okay?

ETA: oops, thought it said five words. Um, more appropriate response: I don't really read porn, but I don't care what other people read? (I know yaoi is like...a specific sub-genre, but I don't know enough about it to really care)

I love m/m slash. But I want the emotional journey of the characters, how they meet and interact (or interact starting from where canon is), getting to know each other more in various situations, and fall in love in a slow burn and in character way. Tropes (narrative, emotional) are great as long as they are in character and it's slow burn. I want the emotional journey/plot and not smut/porn. Alas, I feel alone!

Addicting as hell, and for the life of me I can't figure out exactly why. Subtext between characters of the same gender gets me all hot and bothered, and reading smut about it gives me life.
Also, "yaoi" and "slash" are different, but I think people are too quick set "yaoi" into narrowly defined conventions.

I like the ones that have unusual protagonists instead of the usual "eternally constipated stare!seme" and "Eyes of a Tarsier / Personality of a wall!Uke". There are some that actually give them actual personalities, which is always appreciated.

I hate when the plot could be solved by ACTUALLY TALKING THINGS OUT, but I'd take that over "we totally had sex but we're both guys so our love is impossible, even if it's not really /weepy face :(".

Oh, and also I'd love if more yaoi/slash had friendship. A plot that heavily focuses on the romance and how the characters are each other's world can get a bit boring.

Also yaoi hands.

If the characters have a fun/interesting dynamic together, I don't care what gender they are - why not take the fun/interesting into a relationship too?

Romance involving two male characters, or guy-on-guy smut, can sometimes be fun and/or hot. Stories that use the "yaoi tropes" of one smaller, weaker, stereotypically-feminine guy and one large, powerful, hyper-masculine guy are less fun for me -- especially if they go in "rape is love" directions. It's awkward with regard to gender and sexuality stereotyping, and characters' canon characterizations too often get shredded and thrown to the four winds as they're forced into yaoi-molds (to say nothing of their canon physical appearances!).
