"mooning"? what's that? google doesn't bring up anything besides "showing one's ass to someone"

Pining. That sort of fluttery, obsessive moping over someone you're not with that gets associated with teenage girls.

Mooning means going all googly-eyed and lovey over someone.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's another word for crushing on someone, or being head over heels in love.

Sort of... to obsess over someone or become infatuated with or have a big romantic teenager-y crush on someone and also mope a bit about how they could never love you? I guess? It's kind of slangy and hard to capture exactly.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It is basically pining iirc.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Pining obviously. Often with adoring staring.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're pining over someone and you show them your ass, you've mooned them while mooning over them.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Gotta ask where the hell are you from/how old are you that you've never heard this term? Not mocking, just blown away that someone has never heard of it.

The original phrase was "mooning over [someone]".

As happens with many colloquialisms, it's been truncated and the original meaning rendered [even] more obscure now that it's intransitive.

OP

You're welcome. Just be careful to disable your typos tab when you preview your own fic on AO3, because what you see is definitely not what you get! I learned that lesson the hard way. :)

Methinks I need to try this. Especially replacing overused epithets with names. Especially all instances of "lover". Fuck that noise.

I do this too, although not to the extent you do. If it's for your own enjoyment, I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

I uh, have done this too. Especially in the case of far too many epithets, though I do it manually so I can't always be assed.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
These are the things that annoy me too. Well done, OP.

Seriously, is it so hard for fic writers to imagine that teenage boys are just as silly as teenage girls, if not more so? I'm imagining the writers who do this are usually female by other clues they leave as well. What does that say about their own sense of self-worth as women, and why would I want to read that kind of fic?

I don't do it to your extent, but I do the same thing with the random words that just.. squick me in particular contexts.

Like replacing "tummy" with "stomach" in sex scenes.

In my family, "tummy" is a word only used when talking about that body part on a younger-than-school-age child. Which makes me just NOPE on out of there, though it's a perfectly legitimate word choice.

I think there's no reason for you to stop fixing things to make them more readable. I do it in my head when I read. As long as you don't publish the edited fics, you're fine.

Maybe you should publish your list, if there's a way to do that. The stuff you find/replace for sounds like stuff other fans might like to try doing without. Heck, I know a few writers who might want to see what their writing looks like without word choices that other people consider annoying.

Does anyone know of a Chrome extension that does the same? Fine and Replace does not appear to stack search terms....

I'm curious, what fandom has army rangers giving blowjobs?

And I disagree with most people here. Encountering the idiosyncrasies of other people's writing, even the annoying ones, helps expand our understanding of language and potential range for future constructions. "Fixing" everything you read is just going to keep you in a bland comfort bubble.
