Mod Question

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a mod, and while fortunately my "commies" as I call them (not for communist, I just have no other word) are pretty good, sometimes they break out into spats. And I'm never sure when to just live and let live and get involved - on one hand, I don't want to be the sort of mod who practically waits until a bomb goes off to do anything, but at the same time, I don't want to turn everything into Cult of Nice either. People are allowed to disagree with each other.

Thoughts?

When personal attacks and insults begin to fly, that's when I would step in. People can be tricky with how they insult someone.

You have to rule with an iron hand tbh, ban them all and let God sort it out

I used to mod a pretty active board back in the mid 2000's. While it was supposed to be a PG 13 board, most of us mods let things slide. Pretty much when people started cursing AT each other was when we stepped in. Do you have the ability to Private message various members? I did a lot of that, messaging members to request they knock off (insert X behavior), and then I would step in and banhammer shit if I needed to.

It's on LJ, so it's tricky because if people don't have that setting or they're anon, I have to call them out publicly. Which I really don't like doing unless it's a friendly nudge, i.e. "you need to fix your formatting," which I generally assume is LJ's fault.

Oooh. Good point. Yeeks. I have no idea how you'd go about that, then. I have no experience with modding anon forums. About the only thing I think I would do, maybe, is go uber professional? That might not always be appropriate, though. :/

If you want to be a good mod, you need to get over calling out (especially anon) people who are being shitty.

I was a mod once, and let people do their thing so as to stay on the good side of everyone (a few other mods were the "jerkasses" the regular members didn't like, so I was the "cool one" they went to for help). Then one day everything just went to shit and I didn't have any control over anyone because they had gone too long without being told to behave.

Long story short, take control now before you lose control. Be firm, but not a tyrant. If there's a little quarrel, don't take sides and just tell /everyone/ involved to calm down and settle things properly. If they don't listen, do something to get them in line, whether it's warnings or changes to rules.

+1-ing not taking sides. The best-case scenario is that all cliques in your community think you're biased against them and for everyone else. Actually favoring one person or group will make life even worse.

Yeah, people are allowed to disagree with each other, but they don't get a free license to spam a community with personal disputes or arguments that are getting just plain ugly. Tell them to contact one another and take their "discuss" to private e-mail/messages.

Or you can remind yourself that people don't have to be nice, but they DO have to be civil adults while on your community. If they don't want to, they can have their tantrum elsewhere. Honestly, you can't be a good mod if you're too worried about whether or not people will think you're mean, etc. You're not there to be everyone's BFF or idol, you're there to keep the peace.
