okay someone please explain to me how a/b/o works

i know it stands for alpha/beta/omega but otherwise i have no idea

From what I understand, an a/b/o universe is one where all alphas are doms, omegas are subs and betas are switches, and you're born as one of them.

Also there's m-preg and possibly penises that knot.

I don't read them, so I could be wrong, but this is what I've gleaned.

What the artist doesn't mention (and what the OP of this secret seems to take a beef with) is that there's "dog cocks", I.E. penises with knots at the base similar to the way some dog species have. (The allure of this premise is based on the fact that the swelling of the knot means that partners can't physically separate until they're finished fucking.)

And I know way too much about this for someone who isn't even in any A/B/O-happy fandoms.

It's basically a group of different sexual and narrative kinks that collided into a vortex of "wow, this is a random and biologically-improbable Frankenstinian monster of of a trope, yet somehow really hot." Part of the reason it's spread so widely is that there's no definite checklist of traits to include, just a set of options, so people can pick the subset that appeals to them (do you like heat? xeno? mpreg? fempreg? soulbonding? D/s dynamics? marathon sex? not all of these, but some of them? well, good news!) and read/write fic that focuses specifically on those.

You're reading some really bad a/b/o, my friend. Every point you've made can be responded to with "that happens sometimes." I'm even seeing more a/b/o fics without knotting these days because of genre changes.

I actually like reading a/b/o fic (I'm pretty much down for reading anything that results in some good angsty h/c), and I will agree that there has definitely been a downswing in knotting fic in that genre. I wonder if it has anything to do with the absolute cluster-fuck TeenWolf has turned out to be. I will also say like any genre there are definitely good stories and really really bad ones.

The only thing I really disagree with in the is that it's the base of the penis that swells. Unless someone has written a variation the other way.

Also you seem to have read some fic that puts far more importance on betas than most of the small amount I have read. In the fics I've read, betas are either normal-ish humans, or a relatively useless middle-class that all the unwanted competition gets shoved into so as to leave the feature pairing uncontested. Or dwarves married to their work in Hobbit A/B/O.

Whether or not that's the case, there is something I find really interesting about the a/b/o gender roles that pop up: they're heteronormative, but almost exclusively applied to same-sex pairings. It's like the entire genre exists just to normalize same-sex pairings in the context of the modern world, because alpha/omega pairings are considered the norm and there is never any backlash for male/male or female/female. I can count the times I've seen a/b/o with male/female on one hand, and I think that's really interesting. Inventing new biology: so much easier than pretending people aren't homophobic, am I right?
