AT least Miyazaki's movies aren't about princesses. I want my daughter to admire girls like Chihiro, Nausicaa or San, not Cinderella or Snow White.

Isn't Nausicaa a princess?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but she isn't a fairy tale princess.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
She is still a princess. And so is Ponyo.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ponyo gives up being a princess, so not a good example there nonny.

She's also flatter and more unrealistically perfect than any of Disney's fairy tale princesses.

But his movies almost always show the same type girl and story. A head strong girl either voluntarily leaves for a new land or finds herself in a new land. There she discovers who she is through her friends and her own new adventures. Only two of his movies stand away from this mold, Castle of Cagliostro and Princess Mononoke with Ashitaka playing the part of the head strong girl.

I'd argue that Chihiro's not exactly headstrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
How? She survived living in the spirit world.

That doesn't make her headstrong. She's very much a wuss for a lot of the movie.

Again, I disagree. Instead of sticking to her parents while they ate in the beginning, she wandered through the town. While everyone was afraid of No Face, she became his friend.

The thing is that Chihiro is one of the few protagonist who we see develop into a self-assured girl. The rest start that way and stay pretty much the same, and we never get much insight into their actual personalities, or what separates from other similar protagonists.

I agree. I find it hard to empathise with the female leads who are badass from the start.

Chihiro and Sophie from Howl are two ones that it's easier to identify with (though Sophie annoys me at the end by falling for the bad boy, blame the source material).

You mean, Snow White who had to run away at a young age and in return for shelter, worked at cleaning house to pay for her keep? And Cinderella, who was also constantly doing chores and all she wanted was--not a prince, mind you--but a night off?

+infinity. I hate the reputation fairytale princesses have nowadays.

Why are you comparing heroines from the 1930s and 1950s to movies from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s? Disney's princesses in recent decades are plenty admirable (not that Snow and Cindy aren't in their own way either) and it's a shame if you're going to shut your daughter out of that because of your own agenda.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The whole reason the Disney Princesses became a thing was because playing Princess was already part of little girl culture. Somebody in marketing noticed it and bumped up what Disney already had to offer. If anything, I think it's like a toe in the door to encourage girls to be something alongside the princess behavior they pretend at. Belle is smart, Ariel is adventurous, Tiana is hardworking. It's a shame Mulan doesn't quite make the lineup because Disney is pretty short on the kicking ass type, but overall the Disney princesses are a sight better than the Spoiled, Gets Her Own Way type of princess that girls might be pretending to be otherwise.
